The last day in the forest swept fairly quickly. Quicker than I wanted it to. My last moments in the forest were the ones I wanted to savor. With my phone I took a couple of pictures here and there.
My appetite all day was lacking, and I was really tired. I would sometimes even have to hold on to the trees for support since I was light headed. I hadn't heard from Namjoon or Tae all day. The school had let us have the last day in the forest as a free day. No work. No nothing. Of course, my only friend here was Tae (maybe Namjoon), and he wasn't here.
The lake was great to just sit and relax. Jungkook had left early in the morning somewhere and hadn't come back to the campsite. I didn't care. He could get lost for all I cared. I couldn't stand him.
The sun began to set, and my arms began to sprout with goosebumps at the chilly air sweeping by my body. I began to make my way back to the tent since it would get dark in the forest really fast.
When I got to the forest, Jungkook had already lit the fire. It smelled good as I approached. When I looked besides the tent, there was a picnic table and a bunch of food over it. I frowned at him and tilted my head to a side.
He saw me and stood up dusting himself. Jungkook saw me looking at the table and rubbed his neck.
"Don't make a big deal about it. I was tired of eating camping food. It sucks to be honest."
It really did. That was something (and the only thing) we had in common. I wasn't in the mood to argue so I just went with it and sat down in front of him in the picnic table. I had never seen Jungkook so happy. His smile stretched from ear to ear as his devouring eyes looked down at the food before us.
Rich kid.
He began to eat without caring and looked over at me with a frown. With his chopsticks he pointed at the warm noodles that smelled amazing.
"Yah. Hurry up. They are gonna run cold."
He said with his mouth full before returning to eat. I grabbed some noodles and began eating. This was real food. Not artificial from a packet or can. I was actually eating. My body felt boosted and restarted. It needed nutrients. Thanks to me being sick, my tummy began to get full really easily. It was only a matter of time before I stopped eating and receiving a really arched eye brow from Jungkook.
"Yah. You better eat more. I didn't go and waste my money for you not to eat."
"Nobody told you to."
"Yeah. And nobody told you to sleep outside the tent either and you still did it."
"Your actions spoke more to me than your words. You didn't want me inside, so I moved outside."
"Well, there you go. I did it because your-what? Actions? Whatever, you understand."
"Why did you do this?"
"What do you mean? Aren't you hungry?"
He was a complete fool. I couldn't forgive myself for thinking that he actually thought about me for once. Usually people would notice when other people would be sick, right? Apparently, Jungkook was anti-facing reality.
I stood up and looked at the tent. The air was icy cold against my face. Tonight, would be worse than the rest. I could feel it in the core of every single bone in my body.
"I'm done. Thank you."
I said without looking at him and heading to see my things on the side of the tent. My hands shook as unzipped my sleeping bag. I felt my fingers numbing slowly and painfully. Just as I was about to unfold my sleeping bag, someone stopped my hands. I looked besides me and saw Jungkook with his bitter signature face.
"Do not make a big deal and just come in."
He let go of my hand and began to grab my things and taking them inside of the tent. Maybe I had already fell asleep and was dreaming that the Jeon Jungkook had asked-no-told me to go inside the tent and taken my stuff in.
I grabbed my sleeping bag and made my way inside the tent. He had organized all my stuff neatly to my side leaving a space for my sleeping bag. I unfolded my sleeping bag and he immediately began to help me. After we had organized everything, he grabbed something from his side and handed it to me. It was a black shopping bag.
"It may be a little early, but I want you to have it. Happy early birthday, y/n."
He said no emotion in his voice. My birthday wasn't until the fall. How did he even know? I opened the bag and saw a big puffy jacket wrapped in tissue paper.
"If you prefer fake leather, I can trade it for you."
I turned to look at him with my mouth open.
"You aren't saying this is really leather, are you?"
"You don't believe me?"
He said with a small smirk. He had never looked at me that way. Or spoken with a different tone other than the one with venom. His voice was friendly and gentle. Why was he being like this?
"Why are you doing this?"
"Doing what?"
"Why are you being nice to me?"
"Didn't I tell not to make a big deal?"
His voice was a little edgier than before. Jungkook was definitely threatening me with his tone change. I needed to keep my mouth shut if I wanted to make it out of here alive. I placed the bag to the side and gave him the best smile I could wear.
"Thank you."
He didn't say anything before tucking himself to sleep. I did the same. There was a small gap between us. Not really. His back was touching mine. We were definitely closer than the first night in the tent. Just as I was about to close my eyes, my coughs began.
Oh, dear.
They didn't stop. I tried not to cough too loud. Jungkook would get annoyed easily at whatever I did. He might even end up kicking me out after all. I felt him turn around and place his hand over my waist hugging me tighter to him. My entire body paralyzed at his warm touch. I felt his warm breath on the crook of my neck. His lips were near my ear sending rushing little sparks everywhere.
"Are you ok?"
I nodded unable to talk. My breath was stuck in the middle of my throat. What was happening to me? Or him?!
Suddenly, I felt his hand rubbing circles in my back. It was comforting in a way. And then, he flipped me over facing him. My heart stopped. I tried to move but he pushed me closer. Neither him or I could say anything. Both of our hearts were accelerating really fast.
"Let's just...stay like this."
He said almost like a whisper. We both looked into each other's eyes. In them, I couldn't find the cold sensation I would always feel at the beginning. It was gone and done. There was only blank, and warmness left behind. He made my head lay in his chest as his strong arms wrapped me in a warm cocoon. I don't know why, but my body began to loosen and let go of any discomfort.
That night my coughs didn't return.
