a matter of my own

Jack steps out of the carriage and dusts off his suit. Tonight, they are attending Christina's party. Jack had put on one of his best suits to attend this party. Ava wore a light blue dress with a beautiful updo that cascades down.

Jack offers his arm for her to take, and the siblings walk into the party. It was bustling with people.

"Remind me why we are attending this party. I do not see anyone I recognise." Ava questions.

"Miss Harris is my friend, and I must support my friends." He explains.

"A friend or a suitor?" She teases.

"A friend. It is completely platonic, my dear sister." He confirms. "Neither of us is searching for a counterpant."

Jack stops when he sees her. Christina was wearing a light pink dress with some diamond jewellery to elevate it.

She turns to them and smiles. "Good evening. Welcome." She greets them.

"Right, Miss Harris, this is Ava, my sister." He introduces them.

The two bow to greet each other. Jack's mother approaches. Kristin looks at Jack.

"Do not give me that look, mother. Miss Harris is my friend." He mumbles under his breath.

"Baroness Kristin of Hawke." His mother introduces herself.

"Baron Darrin of Hawke." He bows.

"Miss Christina of Southampton." She bows once more. "It is a pleasure to meet you all."

"Miss Harris, may I have a word with you?" Jack asks. He has a look of despair on his face.

Christina nods. "Sure." She nods her head at the dancefloor.

Jack stretches his hand, and the two get in position.

The Lord clears his throat. "Miss Harris -" He starts, but he's quickly interrupted by her

"Christina, my given name is Christina." She corrects him.

"Christina,"he restarts, "You are a life saver. One more minute by my stepfather, and I would have gone mad." He sighs.

Christina chuckles quietly. "It can not be worse than my father."

Jack twirls her. "He chews with his mouth open, he snores, and he constantly walks in my office."

"After showering, my father likes to look out the window. Still bare to the world. It is traumatic. " She shivers.

They laugh.

"At least he does not speak of fornicating your mother at the breakfast table." He cringes.

Christina laughs loudly, alerting everyone who paused their dance. Jack chuckles, too. The two keep dancing despite the odd stares being sent their way.

"I should not have laughed at that, I am sorry." She mumbles as Jack shakes his head with a smile on his face.

"That was a completely normal way of reacting to such absurdity." He reassures. "Allow me to steer the conversation to something more important."

"Have I rubbed off on you? Is it about the royal family?"

"It is."He confirms.

"Do you see the man in a blue suit?"

Jack looks around as he dances. "Yes, blond hair, is it not?"

"Yes. He is the king's nephew. Prince Thomas. He is the second in line. Your sister could become our queen."
