REAL LIFE

"milani, i can't even speak to you right now," nick huffed as he held out his hand at the girl.

the five of them had just finished dinner and were currently heading back to the car, which was a little ways away from the restaurant as they had some trouble finding parking near the place.

with it being fairly late, ella was beyond tired so chris had offered to give her a piggyback ride to the car. the two of them were walking just a little ahead of nick, milani, and matt, of whom were all walking at an even pace. while ella and chris were in their own little world, nick continued to argue with milani about her instagram post.

"nick, i think you're overreacting," matt claimed, shrugging his shoulders.

milani cocked her head to the side, looking over at matt, "thank you."

"ugh, you know what?" nick started, quickening his pace. "i'm just gonna go talk with chris and ella. they'll have my back."

milani and matt laughed in unison as nick walked ahead of them. the laughter was short lived as the two instantly felt awkward now that they were walking together alone. more so, milani felt awkward.

matt was really good at hiding his emotions, especially when it came to his and milani's past. milani was so dumbfounded that he was able to pretend like nothing ever happened and convince others the same.

it was at this moment that she had gotten the sudden urge to ask matt why he's doing all this. why he left her side a month ago to be with sarah.

"hey matt," she said, softly.

"what's up?"

before milani could get the question out, she started freaking out and decided against asking him. as much as she wanted to know the answer, she was suddenly too afraid to learn what that answer was.

"how uh- how are things with you and sarah?"

matt was a little taken aback by her question. he knew that he and milani used to be a thing, and he knew that she didn't like sarah ever since they started dating. but he couldn't blame her. it was just shocking to hear her asking about the girl when she strongly disliked her.

"oh.. it's uh- going well."

in all honesty, milani wasn't expecting an answer longer than the one she had just received. though it wasn't her original question she intended to ask, she didn't expect anything more than a simple 'it's going well'.

"that's good to hear," milani smiled small, as they neared the car. "she's lucky to have you."

"yeah.." he trailed off.

milani started thinking to herself that maybe she should just let things go. truly forget that anything ever happened between her and matt. it's been a little over a month since the two stopped seeing each other like that, and as much as it hurt her, it wasn't worth fighting for if matt was going to pretend like nothing happened.

if all they could ever be from now on was friends, she was willing to take that over not being anything at all.

"matt, unlock the fucking car," nick yelled as he dramatically tried opening the back car door.

trying to cut the tension, milani jokingly shoved matt lightly, "yeah, matt. unlock the car."
