Make Him Smile?

POV Sonic

I sat in the middle of the classroom, as usual, while my friends, Knuckles, Amy, and Tails, greeted me as they walked in and sat on their usual seats. We're seniors, besides Tails, so we don't have a seating chart; we just kinda adapted to a seat and stuck with it. (Tails is really smart so he hops grades.) I watched the people walk inside; sally, scourge's not here 'cause he's skipping, vector, blaze and Silver, and at last, Shadow.

Shadow wasn't much of a talker, more like a walker. He just walks to school, gets through the school day, and then goes home I guess. Matter of fact, I've never seen him wear an actual expression on his face, he looks so stoic and mean.

I've had Shadow for the first 3 years of Elementary, until he "moved". I also saw him for two years in middle school, until he stopped going. Surprisingly, he has made it through all of the 3 years of high school.

And yet, throughout all of the time's I've actually seen him, he was always so..emotionless, it kind of scared me back then. When I was bored and when I had free time, I would watch him to maybe catch a smile. Although I never saw a smile, I did see the type of person he is. He talks when he needs to; he talks to teachers and when people ask him for help. He's respectful, not exactly shy..not even a little shy. He's just sort of there.

Thump! The teacher slammed the book she was carrying on her desk, scaring me and a few other students. "Sonic! You're dozing off again! Pay attention and start getting your sleep schedule together!" The teacher yelled at me as I flinched when she called my name. I awkwardly smiled while the class laughed. I stared at Shadow, who sat on the front, he looked back for a second, then turned away rather quickly. I didn't really matter to him, I don't think anything matters to him.

It was soon lunch and I waited in line for my food, they were serving pizza today! Usually I just get out to buy something from the gas station nearby, but I didn't have cash on me, and I didn't want to leave my friends out. (I'm their sugar daddy and they rely on me to buy them food.)

I saw Shadow in the corner of my eye, sitting down with headphones on, bopping his head ever so slightly. I wonder what he's listening to. Then he stood up to walk out of the cafeteria. I guess it is crowded in here isn't it?

"Hey man. You've been zoning out too much today, sum happen?" Knuckles said as he walked in front of me in the line; I was taking too long to pick a juice.

"Yeah, my bad, just thinking." I chuckled and I left the line, waiting for Amy and Tails to pick out their food. "You've been looking at that loner a lot lately. Any reason why?" Knuckles smirked as he bumped his elbow on my shoulder. "His name is Shadow, Knux. And I'm just wondering why he's so emotionless all the time, that's all. I never really seen him..express..anything? Kinda creeps me out how someone could look so numb. I can't judge him though, maybe he has his reasons, I'm just curious." I crossed my arms as I looked at Shadow through the cafeteria window, leaning against a pillar and sitting down with his knees drawn up.

"Now that I think about it, you're right." Knuckles stared at him as well. "Hey, you know what would be fun?" Knuckles began to state. I turned to him raising a brow. "Since you seem so obsessed on making that emo show an emotion, I'll give you 50 bucks if you can make him smile in 10 days." I thought for a while, make him smile? I know nothing about him though.

"Wouldn't that be wrong though? Just betting on someone?" I replied. "Well not if it's a benefit, if he doesn't smile he must be sad, he's a loner! So you're actually doing him a favor. Plus, you might even make a new friend and you get money. If, of course, you make him smile." Sometimes I forget that Knuckles can be a little off the rails. Just because someone doesn't smile, it doesn't mean they're sad. They're just feeling something else, and that's okay.

"Alright, deal. I'll start tomorrow knucklehead. I will get those 50 bucks." I said in a competitive manner. I wonder how this will go. I thought to myself, actually feeling incredibly nervous about the interaction I'm about to approach.
