A Growing Family

Chapter 4

Today was the day. The day Castle and Beckett we're going to find out if Kate was pregnant. Kate had been looking forward to this day for a while, at least until yesterday. Castle had been diagnosed with the flu, and he couldn't get out of bed, much less make the trip to the OB/GYN.

"I'll just reschedule it," Kate said to Castle the morning of the appointment.

"No you won't! You've been waiting on this for a really long time. Just go without me. Bring me home an ultrasound picture," Castle said with a weak smile.

"Are you sure?" Kate asked, still a little uncertain.

"Yes. Now go get ready or you'll miss the appointment," Castle said, giving Kate a slight shove in the direction of their closet.

As Kate sat in the waiting room of her OB/GYN, she couldn't help but think about how she wasn't doing this with Castle. She couldn't help but wish that he was here. She was still thinking about it when she heard her name called.

"Katherine Castle!" The nurse shouted.

Kate got up and went with the nurse. She did all of the standard measurements and then followed the nurse. "You'll be in room 5. Dr. Caldwell will be right with you," the nurse said, leaving Kate in the room. Kate waited about 5 minutes before she heard a knock on the door.

"Good morning Kate. Where's Rick?" Dr. Caldwell asked.

"He has the flu. Actually, I need to ask you something because of that. I know that you would normally just do an ultrasound to see if I was pregnant, but since Rick can't be here, can we just do a blood test. If I actually am pregnant, I want to do the first ultrasound with Rick," Kate explained. "Of course. Just let me go find a nurse to do that for you," Dr. Caldwell said, walking out of the room. Kate waited for about 10 minutes before a nurse, different from the one she had earlier, walked in. "Hi. I'm Laura and I'll be the one taking your blood today," the nurse said in greeting. "I'm Kate," Kate replied. The nurse got all of the materials ready and asked Kate which arm. When Kate answered left, the nurse, Laura, began to draw blood from that arm. After she had all the blood she needed, she left to test it. "It should take about 30 minutes," the nurse said as she walked out. Kate decided to take out her phone and play 'Candy Crush', knowing it would probably be a while.

35 minutes later, Kate heard a knock on the door. She quickly put her phone in her purse as her doctor walked in. "I have the results of your blood test," Dr. Caldwell said, sitting down. "And?" Kate asked, growing extremely excited. "Looks like there's going to be another Richard Castle running wild in New York. You're pregnant Kate!" Dr. Caldwell said, smiling. "Really?" Kate said, already feeling happy tears spring to her eyes. "Really," the doctor confirmed. With that, the doctor gave Kate the file, and started to walk out. "Wait! Why are you giving me this?" Kate asked. "So you can show Rick. By the way, I want to see you in two weeks to do an ultrasound." With that, the doctor left Kate to show herself out. Kate went to the front to schedule her appointment. Once it was scheduled, she walked out of the office. To her surprise, she found Castle's town car parked at the front of the building. She got in, and asked the driver Jerry how long he had been there. Luckily, he had only been there for 20 minutes. With that, they drove home.

When Kate walked in the loft, she was greeted by a sleeping Rick on the couch. Not wanting to wake him, she quickly went into their bedroom. She decided to take a nap. Two hours later, she woke up to her husband laying beside her.

"Staring is creepy, Castle," she said groggily. Castle just smiled. "What? What did you do?" She asked.

"I saw the file. I didn't read it because that was your business, but I did connect the dots," he said with a smile. "Yes, Castle. We're pregnant!" Kate said. At that Castle gave his wife a big kiss.

The two talked about the baby for a little while before Kate decided to make her husband rest. He needed to get better so that he could be better for their ultrasound appointment in two weeks.

One week later, Rick and Kate were sitting in their living room watching a movie. Rick was feeling better, much to Kate's delight. They had been enjoying themselves for about an hour. When the movie was over, the couple decided that it was time for bed. Rick went and got ready in the bathroom while Kate put on her pajamas. When Rick was done, the two switched. Kate needed to go to the bathroom. She looked down, and was terrified.

"CASTLE!!!!" She called, the fear clearly in her voice. Her husband came running. "What? What's wrong?" He asked, terrified. "I'm bleeding," Kate said, tears springing to her eyes.
