A Growing Family

Chapter 6

The Next Week

Today was the day of their first real appointment at the OB/GYN, and the Castle family was extremely excited. Alexis had begged to go because of her interest in medicine (or at least that was her excuse. Castle and Beckett knew that she wanted to see the babies because she was excited to have siblings.). Martha had also asked to come in order to see how ultrasound pictures had changed over the years (and to see her grandchildren.).

After hours and days of begging, the couple relented and let the two come along to the appointment, just this once.

Although Alexis knew that Kate was pregnant with sextuplets, they hadn't gotten the chance to tell Martha yet. They had barely gotten the chance to tell her they were even pregnant. Today she was going to find out. Alexis had been barely able to keep the secret. Rick had been just a little bit better. Kate had been the best, but she was ecstatic too. Martha had noticed that the three were acting strange in the past week, but she figured that in time it would either go away or they would tell her.

"Kate, are you almost ready? We're going to be late!" Castle yelled as he walked into their bedroom. "Almost done!" Kate yelled right as he husband walked into their bathroom. "Hey," she said as Castle slid his hands around her waist to settle on her stomach. She was putting the finishing touches on her make up. She finished her mascara, and turned around to face her husband. "Ready," she said with a smile.

The two walked out of their bedroom to be greeted by two redheads. "You guys ready?" Castle asked them. They both nodded. "Then let's go!" Castle said, leading them out the door.

In the waiting room at the OB/GYN, Alexis Castle felt weird. She felt like she belonged there. She had known for a while that she wanted to be a doctor, but she didn't know what root in that she wanted to take. Sitting here, knowing that she was waiting to see her brothers and sisters for the first time, knowing that she was going to get to help with them- probably a lot- she felt drawn to the OB/GYN office. She knew then and there that that was the field she wanted to be in. She wanted to become and OB/GYN. She smiled to herself at her realization, but she didn't let it show. She would tell her parents at a later date. Today was there moment to surprise her Gram.

30 minutes after they arrived at the OB/GYN's office, they heard the door open.

"Kate Castle?" The nurse called from the door. The group stood up and walked towards the door. "You brought a group today," the nurse commented. Kate smiled and followed the nurse. She led them to a room and went in.

"Ok, so I'm gonna need some blood, pee, and your weight. For this, everyone else needs to be in the waiting room. You can come back in a minute," the nurse explained. Martha and Castle stood up, followed by a reluctant Alexis. She had wanted to watch her do the tests.

10 minutes later, after she was done with the tests, the nurse went and got Castle, Martha, and Alexis. When they got back in the room, Castle regained his seat beside the table. Martha and Alexis took their places standing beside the table.

About 30 minutes later, the doctor finally came in. "Hello," she greeted. "Hi," Rick and Kate said at the same time. They looked at each other and smiled at their "crazy mind thing" while his daughter and mother looked and each other and rolled their eyes at the very same thing. Dr. Caldwell rolled the ultrasound machine from the corner of the room to beside the table and her chair. She squirted the gel on the ultrasound stick, warned Kate about the cold gel, and placed it on her stomach.

"Ok. Here's baby A, B, C, D, E, and F. They all look very healthy," she said as she pointed at each one as she went. "Do you want pictures?" She asked a second later. "Yes," the couple answered quickly, anticipating questions from Martha coming soon by the look of utter shock on her face.

"Are you saying that Kate is pregnant with six babies?" Martha asked Dr. Caldwell. Dr. Caldwell nodded. With that, Martha proceeded to faint. "Martha!" Kate yelled, just as her husband yelled "Mother!" and her daughter yelled "Gram!".
