~Michelle's POV~

Once Aaron and Marie left, it was just Kayla and I “So what now?” She asks from her spot on my bed, looking up at me mischievously.

“…I'll get you an air-”

“Wouldn't it be odd to have an air mattress in your room when no one is supposed to be in your room but you?" she asked matter-of-factly “And if it were your sister, she’d just sleep in your bed, no need for another mattress”

I sighed “Fine,” I walked back over to the bed and crawled under the covers hesitantly opening my arms for her, she may be my mate, but she was a vampire, absolutely unpredictable, what if she killed me? When I noticed she didn't move I looked up seeing her looking at me sadly, before wiping all emotions from her face.

“If you hate me that much I’ll just sleep on the floor. She got off the bed and walked over to the far side of my room where there was a random empty spot and lay on the floor, her back turned to me.

I felt a pang of guilt in my chest as I watched Kayla lie on the floor. Swallowing my fear, I called out to her softly, "Kayla, come back to bed. I don't hate you."

She hesitated for a moment before slowly getting up and making her way back to the bed. Instead of getting in bed she simply looked at me expectantly “You need something?”

“Yeah, you to get in bed,” I said lifting the sheets again

“You don’t want me in bed with you, and honestly, I don't really want to make you uncomfortable.” She muttered crossing her arms “Teasing you is one thing, and making you absolutely uncomfortable is another"

Without breaking her gaze, I scooted over, creating a space for her beside me. "I'm not uncomfortable with you here, Kayla," I whispered, my heart racing in my chest. She hesitated for a moment before slipping under the covers next to me. The warmth of her body beside mine sent shivers down my spine.

“See you don’t want me-" I quickly grabbed her wrist

“I’m just- not, used to this okay. Not to mention that, Vampires killed my parents, you can’t just expect me to ignore the fact that you and my parents' murderers are the same species” I explained slowly letting go of her wrist.

Kayla's eyes softened as she listened to my words, and for a moment, the playful glint in her eyes faded, replaced by a look of understanding. She reached out tentatively and took my hand in hers, her touch surprisingly gentle. "I know I can't change what happened to your parents, Michelle. But I want you to know that I would never hurt you. I care about you too much," she spoke softly, her voice barely above a whisper.

"I want to trust you, Kayla. Just give me some time."

A bittersweet smile tugged at the corner of Kayla's lips as she squeezed my hand gently. "I'll be here whenever you're ready, I’ve waited 1700 years, I can probably wait a bit more” She responds. I know she probably didn't mean to, But I felt even more guilty. She’s spent literally hundreds of years waiting for me, and here I was pushing her away because of my trauma.

“I’m sorry”

“Its fine, wolfy" She teased smiling at me

“Bedtime?” I asked, ready to move on from this topic, I’ll deal with it later.

“You go ahead, I'll fall asleep whenever,” She said making me a little confused before it clicked

“Right, you're a vampire you don't need to sleep"

"No, but I can keep you safe while you sleep," Kayla replied with a wink. I couldn't help but chuckle at her playful demeanor, feeling a warmth in my chest that had nothing to do with the covers we shared. As I settled down to finally rest, I felt Kayla's presence beside me, a constant reassurance in the darkness of the night.
