~Kayla's POV~

Waking up to a beautiful mermaid kissing your lips is, something. As I opened my eyes to the sensation of soft lips pressed against mine, my heart skipped a beat. Liriel, the mermaid with her dark blue hair cascading around her, was leaning over me with a mischievous twinkle in her sapphire eyes. I could feel the warmth of her touch lingering on my skin, sending a shiver down my spine.

“Good morning, sleepy vampire,” she murmured, her voice like a melody in the early morning light. I blinked up at her, still dazed from the unexpected kiss.

“Good morning, beautiful mermaid ” I managed to reply, my voice husky with sleep, a small smirk on my lips.

Liriel chuckled softly at my response, her laughter like the tinkling of wind chimes on a breezy day. "You're quite the charmer for a vampire," she teased, a playful glint in her eyes. Sitting up, I ran a hand through my tousled hair, trying to shake off the remnants of sleep that clung to my mind.

As I looked around, the lake seemed to shimmer with a renewed vibrancy under the rays of the morning sun. The forest surrounding us was alive with the gentle rustling of leaves and the chirping of birds greeting the day.

“Do you always wake up strangers with a kiss?” I teased,

Liriel's smile widened as she reached out to tuck a stray strand of hair behind my ear. “Only the intriguing ones,” she replied playfully, her fingers grazing my cheek with a feather-light touch. Without breaking eye contact, I took her hand from my cheek and kissed her palm, she leaned forward, our noses almost touching “Do you have a mate, Vampire?”

“No, I haven't found my mate yet," I admitted quietly, my gaze locked with Liriel's intense sapphire eyes.

“Does that mean I can have another kiss?” She asked pressing the palm of her other hand onto my thigh.

I felt a surge of desire coursing through my veins as Liriel's touch sent a jolt of electricity through me. Her scent, a mix of saltwater and lilies, enveloped me, intoxicating my senses.

“But of course, darling" With that I leaned forward pressing my lips against hers. Somewhere in the back of my mind, I had a feeling this was wrong, the same feeling I got whenever Chelsea and I had sex, but I chose to ignore it, gently nibbling Liriel's lip, drawing out an adorable moan.

Her hands found their way to my shoulders, and she pulled me closer, her lips pressing firmly against mine. “that felt, good" she whispered as we pulled away

“Likewise,” I said caressing her cheek, “now as much as I’d love to stay, I should get going"

Though she looked a bit sad, she nodded “If you need me, just go to any large enough body of water and call my name" and with that, she went back to the water.

I watched as Liriel disappeared beneath the surface of the water, the ripples forming a trail behind her. Sighed once more and got up, pulling my clothes, and shoes back onto my body, and leaving the lake behind.

As I walked away from the lake, my mind was filled with a mixture of confusion and curiosity. I had never encountered a mermaid before, let alone one as beautiful and enchanting as Liriel.

Our encounter had been unexpected, but the connection I felt with her was undeniable, maybe it was platonic or just sexual. I couldn't help but wonder what it would be like to be with her, to have her as my mate.

I shook my head before looking up at the sky “FUCK YOU, LIFE" I yelled in annoyance

I stomped on, wondering if life hated me so much it couldn't give me the really pretty mermaid as my mate, we’d find a way to fuck.

“Boo!”

“AHHH!”  I screamed but stopped realizing it was just Thistle again “Really? Also, why are you out here what about your mother?”

“Meh, you really expect me to follow the rules?” He asked his pearlescent wings fluttering mischievously

“The rules are there to keep you safe" I pointed out continuing my walk, hearing him follow

"But where's the fun in that?" Thistle replied, his voice tinged with mischief, making me shake my head.

“What to do with you” I tutted

“Hey, I’ve never seen a vampire feed, can you show me!” Thistle asked flying in front of me

“That’s just weird Thistle,” I said shaking my head and watching him shrug

“So uh, can I have your name?” Thistle asked

“No Thistle, you cannot have my name, also you already know my name," I said not falling for the oldest trick in the book.

“Awe, shucks," he said before giggling “So where are we going"

“Nowhere in particular, so you had better head home before your mother siccs all the fairies on me for taking her baby," I said shaking my head

Thistle pouted, his lower lip sticking out in a comical expression of disappointment. "Fine, fine, I'll go home," he grumbled before zipping off into the trees, leaving me alone once more with my thoughts.

“Oh and-"

“AHHH!”

“Shh" Thistle shushed me grinning from ear to ear “If you ever need me, just call, and I'll be there"

With that, he actually left. As I continued to walk I started to hear noises. I followed said noice and realized I reached human civilization. I scowled and walked in the other direction. Sure I needed their blood to survive, doesn't mean I like interacting with them, humans were, odd, to say the least.

“Now what are you doing out here?” startled I looked beside me to see a mature-looking lady, with graying red hair and striking green eyes. A witch.

“Nothing in particular,” I said, wary of the witch as apparently this was another group of people, us Vampires have wronged. Honestly, if I were in their shoes, I’d hate me too.

"And why do you say that?" the witch inquired, her gaze piercing through me.

“I- I didn't say anything,” I said

“Telepathy,” she said briefly

“Well, the obvious,” I said pretty much pointing at the multiple wars waged against the witches who had done literally nothing wrong but chose not to assist vampires in whatever weird experiment they wanted to do.

The witch's expression softened slightly at my response as if she understood the weight of our history. “Yes, the past has been filled with conflict between our kinds,” she admitted, her tone tinged with a hint of melancholy. “and while neither of our kind gain anything from this, I need you to have these"

Out of one of her pouches, she took a bottle of clear liquid that didn't move like water at all, and a crystal in an odd shape. “What are those for?” I asked as she put the objects in a separate bag and handed it to me

“You’ll know when the time comes," she said smiling at me “Tell your mother hi for me, say it was Zarah” and with that, she faded right before my eyes

“Okay, you know what, at this point, i’m definitely dreaming,” I said before pinching myself, the pain making me realize, no, this isn't a dream.
