As the end of the day was approaching, I began to grow more and more nervous. Of course the whole boys basketball team would be watching our tryouts. Actually that's a good thing because I don't really care about anyone other than Lucas on that team, and he calms me down. This could be a good thing. As the last bell rang, I got up and headed to my locker. I grabbed my homework and threw it in my book bag. Deep breaths. Deep breaths. I grabbed my volleyball bag and threw it over my shoulder. It's time. I am literally so nervous that I might actually throw up. This is insane. Why am I here again? Duke. Duke. Duke. Duke is my dream school and I have worked so hard to get there. I kept giving myself tiny little pep talks. Before I realized it, I was in front of the locker room door. I hesitantly opened it, and when I did, all eyes were on me.
"Hi. I'm Ina." I said trying to break the ice.
"We know. This is all anyone's talked about all morning." a girl named Liz said with a smile and a small laugh.
"Oh." was all I could say. My face was bright red and I'm not gonna lie, I was quite uncomfortable and embarrassed.
"Look. We all talked about it, and we've never seen you play and we have never even talked to you before today, so we're not gonna be bitches to you. It's only fair to give you a chance." the team captain Carly spoke giving me a genuine smile. I returned the smile, nodding at her with a simple "Thank you." After we were all dressed and laced up, we made our way into the gym to start warm ups. I had on a white Ravens volleyball shirt, black spandex, my ankle braces, and my nike shoes. We started off with running 15 laps which wasn't anything compared to club running. Then we grabbed a partner, and mine was Carly. We did our arm warm ups and soon enough, we started to pepper. After warm ups, we did some easy drills and then went straight into playing. I was on a team with Carly, Becca, Grace, Morgan, and Jessica. I was playing outside hitter which was where I normally was. I could play all around, but my strongest was outside and setting. I loved to set, but hitting gives me a chance to let all my anger out and it just makes me feel good inside when I get a kill. We played a couple games, and overall I think I was playing pretty well. Hopefully they thought so too.Lucas' POV
I was watching Ina and man is she amazing. I'm so proud of her. She's put so much time and effort into what she loves and you can tell its paid off. She's on a whole other level then these girls to be honest. She's ready for Duke. Ina's team got to take a water break, so she quickly ran over to me.
"Hey superstar." I teased. She laughed and rolled her eyes at me.
"Oh please. At least my coach wasn't begging for me to play." she laughed in response.
"But she would've if she saw you play before today. Ina, you killed it." I said shaking her shoulders. She just laughed at me. The coach blew the whistle for the next team to go on, so she had to leave. When she turned around I smacked her butt just as a joke. She's my best friend and best friend only. She does have a hella body tho. That ass is pretty nice if I'm being completely honest. After I did that, she just turned around laughing and giving me a jokingly glare. After a few minutes, I glanced over at the team, noticing they were being unusually quiet. I suddenly knew why. They were all staring at Ina, including Nathan and man was I pissed. This was not good. After a while, their practice was finally over, and it was our turn. Practice is hell for me because of Nathan and his little army. The only nice one on the team is Jake. It just sucks that I have to go through all of this suffering just because I want to do what I love. Of course Ina was watching the entire practice too since she was my ride home. You could tell she was furious at Nathan, and totally unamused by his games. This was going to be a long season. Things were changing, and not for the better.
