The life I lived was absolutely, ordinary. Until I met an abnormal boy who changed my ordinary life into something beautiful, tragic and mystical.
It was an August evening, the rain drizzled and the thunder roared sending shivers down my spine. I laid in my large bed hiding under the dark duvet. The evening rain smelt sweet, a fragrance that soothed me like a baby in the arms of his mother.
"Tulsa! Dinner is ready." Savannah, my younger sister, called.
My mother decided we should have a 'great feast' in honor of me and Savannah going back to school. Carefully I opened my door, an aroma of food danced through our home. My mother wasn't a professional chef but, she did make a mean turkey burger.
Everyone sat at the table watching me, waiting for me to sit down.
"Tulsa, have you been in bed all day?" My father questioned undoing his tie.
"Yeah. I didn't feel like going to the fields today." I answered as I awkwardly sat adjacent to Savannah. Crimson-colored plates and clear glasses decorated our dining room table. He sighed loudly nodding in disapproval.
"Unlike Tulsa daddy I actually got up and did something productive." Savannah boasted.
I rolled my eyes, snatching the spaghetti bowl from my irritating sister. Savannah constantly had to be better than everyone else especially me! Everything was a competition to her.
"Tulsa!"
I look to my mother, who is glaring at me for not paying attention.
"Are you excited for school?"
"No!" I replied, wrinkling my nose at the thought of school.
What kind of person is excited to go back to school?
Fortunately enough, this was my senior year. After this I am technically done with school but, not attending university is unacceptable in my family. My grades have always been good, and I make friends effortlessly. I only disliked school because I had to wake up in the morning.
"She would rather be in bed, Allison!" My father teased smiling widely. "Finally you understand me old man." I giggled stuffing my face in spaghetti.
Savannah and my mother exchanged a look of disgust as they watched me eat.
"Tulsa! Eat correctly" My mother instructed. I sighed looking down at my bare plate.
"May I go to my room, I'm finished with dinner." I asked.
"Yes you may" My father announced.
Hurriedly, I leave the dining room, "Thank you for dinner mom!" I screamed running up our steep stairs.
I shut my door, taking in a few deep breaths. My room smelt sweet like the rain that was cascading down the window. I sat down on my messy bed looking outside.
The scenery outside my window was eerie but, I was so captivated by it. Evergreens surrounded our modern house which made the nights seem gloomier. But, that August evening the sky was filled with dark clouds that occasionally brightened from the powerful lightning.
My door swung open, revealing an 11 year old girl. "What should I expect?" Savannah questioned, leaning up against my door frame. She was nervous for her first day of middle school and had been for a few weeks.
"Expect the worst!" I announced smiling widely.
"I am serious, Tulsa!" She groaned loudly walking closer to me.
"There is nothing to be afraid of Savannah! It's quite fun but, don't expect every teacher to be as nice as all your elementary ones." I explained as Savannah sat on my bed. "You're going to make a lot of friends!" I announced, patting her back in sympathy.
"Hopefully."
Savannah had never been a 'social butterfly' like me but, she tried. Most of her attempts at making friends were never successful though. My sister was more concerned about her education and being better than me. When I was 11 all I was concerned about was boys and trying to make more friends.
"You will make friends, nerdy weird friends but, friends" Savannah giggled as she got up from my bed.
"Thanks sis that really means a lot!" Savannah mumbled as she walked away.
"No problem!" I yawn.
Before Savannah could shut the door my mother strolled in holding a large plate of baked goods. "It's so dark in here Tulsa!" My mother announced quickly turning on the overhead light.
"The light! It burns"
My mother giggled sitting down on my large bed. "I made cookies want one?" The smell of baked goods overwhelmed me as I grabbed three white chocolate chip cookies.
"Thanks"
She glared at me watching me stuff my face with warm cookies. "Delicious mom!" I giggled as crumbs fell upon my disheveled bed.
"Senior year starts tomorrow! After this you are on your own kid." She explained frowning sadly.
"Mom! I will visit you every break, you know I will!" I exclaimed rubbing her back in comfort.
"Darling I know, I know. I'll just miss you!" She sighed watching me finish her cookies. "I'll miss you too mom." My mother smiled at me showing off her beautiful smile, a beautiful smile I wish I had.
"Well, you should go get some sleep school starts tomorrow!" She announced getting off my bed.
"Mom!"
"Yes darling?"
"I love you." She smiled widely, joy erupted from her face as she turned off the light. "I love you too Tulsa." My mother cooed closing my door. The light had disappeared and I was left by myself in my cold room.
Gently, I laid back in bed listening to the bizarre noises that came from outside comforting me into slumber.
