9. (Don't) Be Nice

It was possibly the longest week of my life and Friday couldn't have arrived sooner. Kai and I travelled to work together daily but his hours made me want to rip my hair off.

Kaidan Berkeley had no respect for time. Every day was a different time. I thought if I was lenient and gave in to him to meet me downstairs at nine AM, he would've gradually gotten into a set routine.

But no luck. He came down at a different time every day and no matter how much I reprimanded him, he didn't care. It wasn't as if he slept in because he was up around seven every morning and spent over an hour in the gym and then took another hour to get ready. He also insisted we stopped for breakfast before we got to the office.

In short, Kai was exasperating.

Kai met me downstairs dressed casually as usual at nine-thirty. We never greeted each other, I complained about his tardiness while he told me daily that if he was so difficult to deal with, I should've quit already.

"Don't look at me like that," Kai said. "I'm early today."

"Is nine-thirty early for you?"

"Yes, it is."

"Ugh," I groaned under my breath. "Can we just go?"

"Wait a minute," Kai stopped me. "Did your job come with a car?"

I nodded. "Yes."

"Really?" Kai looked taken aback. "Then why have you been travelling with me the whole week?"

"The first rule of babysitting is to never let the child, or manchild in my case, out of sight."

"Is that what you tell yourself every time you devour me with your eyes?" Kai raised a brow and smugly walked off.

"I do not devour you with anything," I defended myself as I followed him. "You're a specimen that needs to be studied."

"Sure," Kai drawled. "Where's your car? I don't want to drive today."

I mentally decapitated Kai at least ten times on our way to work. He fell off to sleep in the car while I battled traffic. He had not a worry in the world and no matter how loud I or the vehicles around us honked, nothing woke him.

Once we reached the basement parking lot, I stared at Kai who was sound asleep. He looked so peaceful while he slept. I also noticed how long and dark his lashes were.

"Lucky, underserving bastard," I whispered under my breath.

I poked his arm and tried to wake him but failed. I gently shook him but failed again. I called his name multiple times and nothing. I snapped my fingers in front of his closed eyes and again nothing.

I should make a sleeping pill with your DNA and call it Kai'd Out.

"Kai," I called and shook him with more force.

The last time he woke up as soon as I removed the covers but there weren't any to remove this time. He sat very still with his head against the headrest, arms crossed, and eyes closed.

I only had one option left and it was to use violence. I rubbed the inside of my palms together, blew over it, and looked at the dormant being next to me.

"You asked for it," I muttered as I pulled my hand back and moved in with force to slap him.

Just as my hand was about to get into contact with his face, he caught my wrist in one swift movement. With my eyes wide and mouth slightly parted, I looked between my hand and Kai.

His eyes slowly opened, and he stared at me nonchalantly for a moment.

"Were you pretending to be asleep all this time?" I asked.
