13. Don't Get (too) Comfortable

My hands curled into fists at my side while I sat in the car. Kai drove us back home with an innocent expression. Lights from outside cascaded over his face, highlighting his sharp, chiselled features. One hand sat on the steering wheel while his other hand was on his thigh.

He licked his bottom lip and glanced at the door mirrors before he switched lanes. I couldn't fathom how someone so evil looked so innocent.

"I know I'm outstandingly handsome," Kai muttered with his eyes on the road in front. "But it's still uncomfortable if you stare at me like that."

I narrowed my eyes and kept staring at him. Kai reached into his pocket and handed me his phone. He glanced at me for a second and his hazel-green eyes shone in the dim lighting.

"Take a picture if you must."

I swatted his hand away. "You have some nerve acting ignorant."

"I have some nerve?" Kai glanced at me, offended. "You're the one staring at me as if I'm a gluten-free all-you-can-eat buffet."

"Gluten-free..." I muttered under my breath and realised the smart arse must've caught on that I didn't do too well with gluten.

"You're doing this on purpose, aren't you?"

"I might come off as perfect but I'm not a mind reader," Kai said. "You need to be specific about what you're trying to say."

I didn't know Kai for a long time, yet I still knew him. He had to have ulterior motives with his proposal to get Ethan to fall for me. Kai disliked me, I disliked him, so I didn't see why he would've wanted to help me without any major price.

Kai got so caught up with Ethan that he proposed getting football tickets for him at Old Trafford. To make it worse, Ethan, who was very introverted, agreed in a heartbeat. If it were with anyone else, I wouldn't have had an issue, but I didn't quite trust Kai alone with Ethan.

I sighed and sank into the car seat. I knew if I explained what I meant, Kai wouldn't have understood.

Once we reached, I got out of the car and rushed inside. I was done with Kai already and the week had just begun.

"Are you jealous?"

I rolled my eyes and contemplated ignoring him, but my ego got the better of me. I stopped outside my front door and looked at him.

"About what?"

Kai annoyingly bumped my shoulder with a grin on his stupid face. "My friendship with Eddie."

"You don't even know his name, but you call him a friend," I muttered more to myself.

"Did it ever occur to you that maybe I choose to get his name wrong to annoy you?"

"Did it ever occur to you that your existence alone annoys me?" I retorted.

"Why do you make it sound as if I want you around?" Kai raised a brow. "You willingly signed up to be around me."

He's got a point. But a girl gotta eat.

"What do you want, Kaidan?" I got to the point. "I might've signed up to be around you but twenty-four hours in a day wasn't part of the contract."

"You're pissed about tonight, aren't you?" Kai's voice had a hint of humour. "Having me interfere in your life must really get under your skin, right?"

I was ready to retort but paused for a moment. I studied Kai and he appeared highly amused. It suddenly hit me why he tried to play matchmaker with me and Ethan. He was trying to get back at me for signing up to be his man-sitter.
