We exited the elevator and just as we were about to enter the office, Kai gripped my wrist. I glanced down at his hold and then at him with a questioning look.
"I thought you didn't want any rumours."
Kai ignored my statement. "Think about my proposal."
"Proposal?" I raised a brow and took a step closer. "You really do want to add fire to the rumours of passion already spreading about us."
"Rumours of passion?" Kai furrowed his brows. "Never mind, I don't think I want to know. But you know what I mean by proposal."
I rolled my eyes. "I told you already, I'm not interested."
"But you didn't even hear my price," Kai said.
"Let me take a wild guess," I mused out loud. "You want to me break the contract I signed with your father and stop babysitting you."
Kai pursed his lips and thought over my words for a second. "The idea first occurred to me, but I know I'd be wasting my precious breath if I proposed that."
I was taken aback at his reply. "What else could you possibly want from me?"
"I'll set up a contract and we can discuss the details in my office during lunch," Kai causally said and let go of my hand.
"Why can't you be this serious about real work?" I raised a brow.
Kai sighed. "You need to loosen up and learn to live on the fun side of life a little."
"My name isn't Kaidan Berkeley," I stated. "I can't afford to live let alone have fun. People like me need to work to make life slightly more pleasant."
Kai fake yawned in response. The day had just begun, and he already got on my nerves. Before he ruined my mood anymore, I decided to walk off.
I took two steps but was stopped once again when Kai grabbed my wrist. I turned around and glared at his hold on me.
"You," I began as I removed his hand from my wrist. "Are getting way too comfortable with me, don't you think?"
Kai looked at me seriously. "If you feel in any way out of the ordinary, let me know."
"Every second with you feels out of the ordinary," I replied sarcastically.
"Aw, do I make your heart race? Do you blush when you think of me? Do you get butterflies in your stomach too?" He stepped closer and looked down at me. "You don't need a doctor to tell you those are all symptoms of falling in love and since I'm the virus here, there is no cure."
I looked at him as if he was the most insane person I knew. Actually, he was the most insane person I unfortunately knew. "And a doctor isn't needed to diagnose your delusion."
Kai feigned a grin. "I love our banter but," his smile dropped. "I'm being serious. If you feel ill, let me know."
I appreciated his kindness, but it also felt weird for Kai, the person I currently disliked the most, to show some sort of humanity towards me.
"I'm fine. Don't let my issues bother you," I replied. "In fact, I'd appreciate it if you forgot what you saw this weekend."
I didn't wait for a reply and walked off. I hated how much attention one silly little flare-up brought. I wasn't a patient or some fragile damsel in distress, I could take care of myself and if I didn't feel well, I would've taken the necessary measures.
Thankfully, Kai didn't bother me for the rest of the morning. I had a bit of work on my desk, and it helped take my mind off anything else. By the time lunch arrived, Kai asked to meet him in his office. I chose to ignore him because I knew he only had one agenda on his mind.
