16. A (little) Extra Angsty?

Other than the unwelcome visitor on Friday night, the rest of my weekend was pleasant. Kai kept to his word and didn't bother me and I avoided running into him at all costs.

I spent Saturday indoors, watching movies and catching up on shows. Ethan called on Sunday and I spent the entire afternoon with him. It was nice to catch up with Ethan after what felt like forever and unlike others, Ethan always respected my wishes when I didn't want to talk about certain things or people.

"You're thirty seconds late."

I didn't have time to grasp my thoughts because the second I opened the front door on Monday morning, my happiness drained.

I looked at him displeased. "The plan is to wait in the carpark, not outside my door."

Kai flicked his wrist, exposing his watch before he read the time. "It will be a minute past nine if you plan on chit-chatting."

I rolled my eyes and locked the front door. I bumped past him and walked away. It was way too early to deal with Kai.

"Did you just roll your eyes at me?" Kai called after me.

"Be happy that's all I did."

Kai easily caught up with me. "Were you born violent or did you develop a problem as you aged?"

I took in a deep breath and chose to ignore him. It was the first time Kai was so chirpy in the morning and it irked me. I wasn't a morning person; I woke up because I had to work but that didn't mean I was happy about it.

"How was your weekend?" Kai made small talk. "Notice, like you requested, I didn't bother you once."

We reached the car and Kai was so busy yapping that he didn't unlock the door. I looked at him expectantly while he looked clueless.

"The door isn't going to open itself," I said.

Kai unlocked the door and made his way to open my door but as soon as I realised what he was trying to do, I quickly opened it myself. I shot him a lopsided look before I got in.

"I should register your thumbprint so you won't need to me unlock the door," Kai muttered as he adjusted the rearview mirror.

"No need," I replied flatly. "I was given a company car, if you weren't bipolar about your vehicle choice, we'd get to work with that."

"What can I say, I like to mix things up a little," Kai half grinned and put on his sunglasses before we took off.

As usual, we stopped for Kai's breakfast and the smell alone made me hungry but also somewhat nauseous. I woke up with a bit of discomfort and nausea so I skipped breakfast.

"Have you eaten breakfast?"

"Yes."

I felt Kai's eyes on me and looked his way. He frowned slightly and studied my features. "You're lying."

"I'm not."

"Yes, you are," Kai insisted. "I don't know you for a long time but you're a terrible liar. Your voice goes down an octave and you look anywhere but at the person speaking to you when you lie."

"Pardon?" I choked out.

"I'm known to be quite observant."

"Well, Mr. Observant, I barely make eye contact with anyone," I said truthfully.

"I know that too but you don't turn your head the other way. Your body language also tells me you're lying. You normally face me when I speak to you but the second you lied, you shifted in your seat toward the window."
