"Guys may we please move to Midrand as it is central to all our houses." Lerumo's brother.
"I hope you don't mean my house because the last time you were there you didn't clean." Lerumo.
"Come on bro, you have a girl now she can help you." His brother.
"You are crazy, my cherry isn't cleaning anything." Lerumo.
They argue for a good 10 minutes before Lungile and Karabo promise to clean up before they leave. I close the curtains as they wash the dishes and clean up. Lerumo has a sleeping Lesedi in his arms. He calls me outside.
"Cherry, I think we should send Lesedi to my mother's." Lerumo.
"Yho baby, that will be taking advantage of her kindness. Let me call Bands."
"So, you don't trust my mother?" Lerumo.
"No love, I don't want to inconvenience her." He calls his mother and puts her on speaker after moving us to his car.
"Mma, how are you?" Lerumo.
"By God we are still good, how are you Fano?" his mother.
"I am good, are you busy?" Lerumo.
"We are watching TV; the kids are waiting for the fireworks. Did you need anything?"
"We need a babysitter, Bhuti and Fifi's sister are all coming to my house for a braai." Lerumo.
"Why don't you bring her here?" His mother,
"Will it not be trouble to bring her?"
"Lerumo, your girlfriend is causing me stretch. Bring that baby here to play with other kids." His mother.
"Thank you Mma, we are on our way." Lerumo and I burst into laughter.
I pack snacks and cold drinks for the kids. I also take ice cream since Lesedi asked for it before she slept. Lerumo reminds me to pack her medication plus nebulizer. I ask Karabo to lock the house, Lerumo and I drive to his parents' house after giving his brother, the Midrand house keys.
Arriving at the house, Lesedi is up and happy to see her Gogo. Lerumo's mother unbuckles her from her seat. We follow them into the yard with her bag. we greet his father then go put her bags in the bedroom.
"Mama Lerumo." I call her out, she is walking to the kitchen calling out the kids to take Lesedi.
"Fifi are you okay?" she asks.
"I am sorry for hurting your feelings, mama has helped me so much that I don't want to burden her anymore."
"Have I complained?" she asks.
"No, Mah."
"Has Lesedi complained about anything?" she asks, and I look down.
"No, Lesedi is a sickly child, and I don't want to burden people with her especially today with the fireworks."
"I guess your boyfriend has not told you that I am a retired paediatric nurse, I have held sick kids and watched them heal, I know CRP and I have a diploma in ECD. Lesedi had an asthma attack on Christmas morning, did you notice?" She asks.
"Mrs Magagula, I don't doubt you capabilities, my fears have everything to do with me. After Bongani died, I had to relay on myself for a lot of things and it is a matter of time before I get used to being helped."
"Refilwe, I don't know the type of family you have but, in this house, if you have a slice of bread and we are all hungry we will share it into crumbs, Lesedi is as much your child as she is Lerumo's. I hope you get with the programme soon because I don't take kindly to people who separate my grandchildren." She reprimands.
"I am sorry again. I packed her medication and a change of clothes."
"Lerumo, take your person, my kids and I want to eat ice cream." She calls out walking to the lounge.
I follow her and bump into his nephew who has a bag of chips, he is taking them outside to share with the others. Lerumo and I greet, Lesedi has no time for us. We drive to Midrand and park the car outside the garage, the others are sitting in the garage. Lerumo fixes the fire, his brother calls me to the side. I follow him to the gate.
"Fifi, I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for the love you have shown my family. Things have been, so bad in the business, and I was stressed out about the kids stationary, the gifts you got have relieved my stress by 80%, your thoughtfulness makes me understand why my brother has been crazy about you. If you are ever and I mean ever need help with anything, please do not hesitate to call me." His brother, Lerumo stands next to me holding my hand.
"Why are you making my woman cry?" Lerumo.
"I was telling her about your main chick, that one from the grocery store." His brother teases, Lerumo chases him while cursing. His brother runs behind me, Lerumo lets him be and walks to the braai stand.
"It is a pleasure, small gestures to thank you all for loving my child."
"My niece you mean. Lesedi la rona." I smile, he give me a hug then we join the rest.
"I was starting to think that isthembu guy will be visiting my house." Lungile.
"I don't share ma'am please; I also love them with shares in pubs." We laugh.Love and light
