"Come on!" shouted a young British girl. "We're going to miss the ship to the New World!" "I'm coming-Im coming." said a masculine voice- boy holding his bags heading onto the ship.
Another boy shortly joined the two of them and they sat together on the ship that would soon venture to the Americas. "I'm so excited!" said the girl. "Me too!" said the first boy. "Mercy, Francis, you two are aware going here is completely a risk!" "A risk?!" Mercy said turning around. "It's not a risk we're going for new opportunities and freedom!"
The boy who had warned them sat down and said, "Yeah but I heard a message was sent saying there are some American Indians there or something." Suddenly a grown man came up behind him and put his hand on his shoulder and said in a sincere voice, "Don't worry son, the military will take care of them getting them off the colonies we acquired. No need to fear them." Once his father left Elliot said, "I heard there's some exchange happening—or been going on."
"Oh? What sort of exchange?" asked the other boy leaning against the railing of the ship. " "I heard it's something called the Colombian exchange." Elliot responded. "Colombian exchange?" Mercy intruded into the conversation. "It's an exchange of goods, ideas and people between Europe, Africa, and the Americas." "Oh they're bringing slaves into the Americas as well?" "I heard so." Elliot confirmed.
The boy leaning against the railing let the wind sweep through his brown hair and glancing at the water said, "I heard the Spanish already got most of South America. Is this true?" Elliot looked up from the floor and said, "Yeah it is. They created a New Caste system as well as an Ecomiemda system."
"What does that even do?" Mercy asked with a chuckle since she's never heard of most of these things. "It grants land from Spanish to Spaniards then the Spanish receive a tribute. Oh and they said that they promised to turn the Natives Christian." Mercy nodded since she was fascinated thought never got the chance to attend school. "Oh by the way that system was practically just turned into what we know as slavery."
"I see..." Mercy said, "I feel kinda bad for the Natives we just took their land." "Well it doesn't really matter." Elliot said standing up and walking over to the railing with the two of them. "After all 90% of them died upon European contact." Mercy looked surprised as well as Francis. "Apprently they don't have the abilities to fight off certain diseases like we do." He told them.
The others stayed silent for some time before Francis said, "I hope the Americas are as good as we're expecting...it would be disappointing if it wasn't." "I don't think we have to worry about that." Mercy responded, "After all it's the New World for a reason!"
