Elliot's mother remarried since she needed a husband and Elliot despised him. He heard his now father named Henry talk about the Homestead Act of 1862 being the first land that would be given to all kinds of settlers women and African American included. He also heard him mention the exodusters were African Americans who left the south. He couldn't lie because he hated listening to him speak about politics because he always use to talk to his father about that stuff.
"Good morning, Henry." Elliot said completely forgetting he was now married to his mother. "I am your father, and you will dress me as such."
"Right...forgot.""Elliot have you heard of the Indian Reservation system and the Dawes Act?" "No." He responded blankly not wanting to talk he just wanted a glass of water. "Let me enlighten you. It keeps native Americans off lands that people want to settle on." Elliot poured his glass of water and said, "Okay." "And the daws act allow the government to break up tribal lands and put them on plots. What do you thing of this?" Henry asked him. Elliot shrugged his shoulders since he didn't want to talk to him.
"Your mother told me you talked about politics with your father a lot. I am only trying to make you feel better." He told Elliot before sipping on alcohol. "Well I don't want to talk to you—He—dad."
"Well you will." He demanding standing up and saying. "Come outside with me." Elliot sighed and followed him outside to the plantation fields. "Isn't it lovely how the new south is embracing the Industrial Revolution?"
"Mhm."
"However since slavery is gone we have sharecropping snd tenant farming, do you like this better?"
"Don't know." He asked not even listening to the question he asked."Well I don't know if you're in favor of slavery or not-." Before his father could finish Elliott interrupted saying. "I'm not. I use to but...not anymore. I never really liked the racism part just the free labor."
"Oh so you don't like racism?" Henry said looking at him while Elliot refused to look at hi. But kept his note eyes focused ahead of him. "There was a Supreme Court case that took place about racism Plessy v. Ferguson, it allowed for separate but equal. Therefore it said Jim Crow laws are allowed." Henry said.
Elliot would comment but he didn't want to. He just hated him so much. He knows he hasn't done much for him but he hated how he continued to push him to view him as a father.
"Here, are you interested in the gilded age that's going on?" "No." He lied.
"Then what are you interested in, huh?"
"Anything that involves not talk to you..."
"Well you're going to like it. So give me that damn glass of water and took at me when you speak." His now father demanded forcing the glass out of his hand setting it down on a nearby table visibly upset."What do you want? To talk? Here I'll tell you about the gilded age we're in! It's just a whole bunch of political corruption with the appearance of prosperity! Andrew Carnegie, JP Morgan and Rockefeller took over industry while others live in poverty? Is that what you want to hear?!" Elliot said now upset.
"Oh so you do know a lot you just don't want to speak." Henry said placing his glass of alcohol on the table before saying, "You're going to drop that fucking attitude."
He didn't reach much but just decided he'd act like he's interested since he could tell the two were already on terrible terms. "Now keep talking to me."
"I don't know what to say." He said backing up against the wall to lean against feeling rather miserable and a bit dizzy. "Tell me your interests in politics."
"I don't know...perhaps the Second Industrial Revolution happening right now...steel railroads and a telephone which would be nice...I can talk to my friend up in the North"
"So you want do talk to your friend but not me?"
Elliot put his hand on the side of his face and exhaustedly wanted to say, "Please shut up." but he knew better.
"If you hate me that much why do you go work in the factories? The South has embraced this Industrial Revolution now so there's a bunch of factories you can go work in. Go work at the places people are striking at. Hear about the Homestead Strike of 1892? or the Pullman Strike of 1894? they lost all of those." Elliot really was never one to be evident of emotions or expressions really but for some reason after his father's death, the civil war and specifically Henry he just feels upset or tired all the time and if not it's usually empty like he always did.
"I don't want to work in factories but I can't stay here my whole life doing nothing." "You're only 18 son, you can worry about that later." Henry said with just further agitated him. "Francis had been working already even if his family has old money but I don't! I heard even Mercy—a friend who went to the North got a job! I'm here stuck doing nothing."
"Oh so you want to go do stuff? Be my guest Elliot. Go work in dangerous factories. Those factories run off labor from these immigrants who are coming into the country seeking opportunities. Your been here since 1491 you're my one of these immigrants."
"I've fought in the civil war. Factories aren't dangerous when I've gotten shot and barely lived so many times." Elliot reminded him.
"I think you need to go to go calm down. Go." His father Henry said picking up his glass of alcohol and taking a sip. With that the blonde when back in his house and to his room.
The next day Elliot headed off to school with Francis. It was a rather boring day since he went to school practically every day but the education had improved over the years.
They sat in class and learned about something called Social Darwinism. He was rather bored listening to the teacher teach snout his most embraced laissez-faire capitalism and racism as well as a survival of the fittest approach knowing that was very dominant in the south since that's where he was from and he's seen the worlds around him.
He also realized that a middle class began to exist because of such a difference in wealth between the rock like Carnegie, him and every day people and those who lived in absolute poverty.
As Elliot was walking home with Francis they saw campaigns for the Populist Party (1891). They allied with the labor movement. "I guess that's all the people who's moving to the cities for jobs."
"Yeah thank goodness a city was build nearby because I got to work there." Francis said since he wasn't a fan of living the the city so he occasionally just walked to work. They were protesting their Candidate William Jenni ga Bryan. They saw a few people protesting against immigrants, "Nativists." Francis said pointing to them a bit. "My parents are one them. They don't like any of these new immigrants...but I don't think they remember we once were and this country was built on immigrants." Francis said since he had different views from his parents.
Society began to advance in industry and technology as well as monopolies beginning but but very few change was saw in societal views on race and immigration and segregation in the South was intensified and nativism.
