Imperialism was in people minds and because of the sinking of the USS MAINE the Americans went to war with Spain believing it was their fault. This was the Spanish-American War.

The war only lasted 6 weeks and Teddy Rosevelt because of his Rough Riders got a lot of credit and popularity for his role in the war. "Ready to go home?" Francis asked. Elliot looked at him and said, "Mhm."
"What? You seem on edge." Francis pointed out putting the last of his stuff in his bag. "I'm so sick of war. I can't stand it." Francis put his bag over his shoulder and said, "Well we're sort of required do help on war. Hey but look on the bright side we were only there for 6 weeks. Amd even better we got so much new territory! Puerto Rico, Guam and the Philippines! Also...why'd you even come? It's not like we were drafted.

"Henry. —My father." Elliot said pissed off, "He told me go serve in this war. "Also I don't really care about the territory we got. I'm just trying not to die here. How many times have you saved me in the last times we've been in war?" Elliot said trying to prove a point but Francis began counting on his fingers and said innocently, "61." Elliot rolled his eyes and said, "Thanks I didn't need an actual number." Elliot sighed and said, "I know we're just trying to help the Cubans from the Spanish who put them reconcentration camps but we don't even actually know because of yellow journalism—some of them were untrue."

"Yeah but some were true...we suffered the same kind of oppression during the American Revolution it was only American to help." Francis noted.

When they returned to America they seen that the world was in a Progressive Era. The Americans began to tackle issues like poverty. This was from the 1890s-1920s.

Francis was at work in one of the factories in the south and he kept on hearing that his corporate bosses were seen as Robber Barons and he sort of had to agree because they used unfair business practices and he noticed like many of the other workers. He was glad that the Progressive Movement was trying to regulate these private industries. "Oh George-hey." Francis said looking back at him. "Have you heard these leader of these monopolies pretty much control the government and we're just here working tirelessly for them!" Francis sighed and said, "Well what can we do? We're just desperate people trying to get by in this industrial world."
"Join Unions! Strikes! We can change it!" George said urging him.
"All the strikes got shut down—the government sides with business because it helps the economy. They don't care about us insignificant individuals."

Another day after work Francis was with Elliot and he asked him. "I read some muck-racking books like the Jungle from Sinclair—is this stuff true...? I know you work so..."
"Well I don't work for that company but I wouldn't be surprised everything is pretty messed up." Francis said brushing his dark hair with his hand. "Not to mention the book How the Other Half Lives...I'm lucky the city is only a few miles away or I would be living like all those farmers and people who moved to the city for jobs." Francis told him.

"Yeah you are but I heard they passed the Meat Inspection act and the Pure Food and Drug act of 1906 also NY tenement House Act of 1901." Elliot told him, "Well yeah but I still wouldn't want to live in the city." He responded, "I know it makes it better but I'd rather walk from my home to the city every day."

Elliot walked over to a cliff where they could see the city a few miles away and asked, "You hear McKinley was assassinated?"
Francis followed him in the cliff but was hesitant since he wasn't a fan of heights. He'd was less afraid of war than heights. "Yeah—Theodore Roosevelt is president now. 1901 to 1909."

"Apparently he was such thing as the Big stick policy—or the Roosevelt corollary." Elliot said picking up a rock and throwing it off the cliff. "Yeah it upholds the Monroe Doctrine. Keeps them damn Europeans out the Western Hemisphere." Elliot said standing awfully close to the edge while Francis stayed a bit back.
