The sun had just set when someone knocked on my door. To my stunned shock, the person behind the door was Fay. Fay Constellation Nova is the second ruling power in Elfame and the dominant ruling power in all of Evren; at least on our side of it. As one whose house literally speaks to and for the gods, even Queen Aine has to bow her head in respect whenever she passes.

However, what makes me uneasy is not her powers but the fact that she's not just half-fairy, she's also half-spirit. Ghost-like wings, hair and skin like starlight. But the most unnerving were her golden eyes that see everything; past, present, future, you name it.

With a stoic expression, she informed me that the castle was having a farewell party for the chosen brides, and my presence was mandatory.

After a deep sigh, I used magic to clean myself before putting on my mother's blue butterfly hair clip.

"Is that all you're bringing to the demon's domain?" she asked as she eyed the satchel on my bed. (Bottomless bags are for deliveries only.)

"Yes," I answered without emotion. I never attend parties, unless my friends invite me, so there's little point in me buying lots of clothes or accessories. Besides, my presence would just make the other fairies very uncomfortable. (Plus, I'm saving all my coin to purchase a plot of land near where my old home was after I reach the required conditions for independence.)

She narrowed her eyes slightly, then escorted me to the castle's ballroom. Along the way, I tried to start a conversation with her, but she was as responsive as a wall.

"Just out of curiosity," I began after the usual small talk failed.

Before I could continue, she answered; "All is by the will of the gods."

She says that whenever she wants to avoid anything; it's her way of saying 'not my circus, not my monkeys'.

What I was going to ask her was if Chamberlain Aelfdene sought her council before adding my name to the list of brides. Not even Queen Aine would dare to make a decision that big without Fay's say in the matter.

Normally, I would give up and continue with the uncomfortable silence; even I'm not stupid enough to piss off a fairy with the Constellation title. But after years and years of her cryptic answers and avoiding my questions, I finally snapped.

"This is the last time you and everyone will ever see me!" I shouted, a vein pulsing on my forehead. "Would it kill you or destroy the whole damn world to give me a straight answer for once?"

Fay turned sharply, making me flinch, and said with mild annoyance; "Your time in this kingdom has come to an end, with or without my saying so. Rejoice, for your greatest wish has come true. Does that answer give you satisfaction, Belladonna?"

At her hard stare, I vigorously nodded. With her acquiescence nod, we resumed our trek in silence.

A hush fell when we entered the ballroom, but at least this time half the reason was because of Fay; the fairies avoid her more than they do me.
