Zatiel woke the next morning from a sound sleep. She did not dream, maybe because of the excitement of the previous day. She had stayed up late studying the night before, but during dinner her father informed her she would have new instructors for martial arts and the short spear with shield. The curved blade was a human weapon, so there were not any local practitioners to become her instructor; the local blacksmith did not even craft them.
Her morning routine sped by and before she knew it she was finished with breakfast. She was instructed to study outside until her martial arts teacher showed up, while she was informed that her spear training would be after lunch. She did as she was told and took the book on beginner spacial magic with her outside.
The young beastkin sat on a large stone in the middle of the courtyard and opened the text again. The instruction was not easy to understand, but she had practiced accessing and controlling her magic the night before. As she read on through the book's introduction, she learned that magic was a large part accomplished through visualization and practice.
The spacial school of magic specialized in formulas for movement, barriers, and storage. The spells themselves would be activated by accessing her mana while visualizing magic circles with the correct runic formula. There were two kinds of spells: persistent ones that would draw mana until released and finite ones that would execute and finish on their own once activated.
To learn a spell she would also need to understand the fundamentals of what it accomplished. The next chapter started by explaining the first spell titled float, which was a persistent spell that could lift an object off the ground and hold it at a desired height. The circle and script was not very complex, so she attempted to cast it on herself.
It took a few minutes for her to get it to work, but she felt the activation before she lifted off the stone's surface. The feeling of floating was strange, like gravity suddenly did not apply to her body. She could not help herself from experimenting further.
She cast the spell again on a small rock in the courtyard and repeated the process until she felt comfortable with it. After casting the spell ten times, she decided to try something new. She took a moment and tried to visualize two magic circles at the same time. She found out she could cast it multiple times at once, though it became much harder to concentrate when trying to do three at once.
By the time her instructor arrived, the surrounding area was cluttered with floating rocks of various sizes. Zatiel looked very proud of herself, as her teacher approached. Before he reached her, she felt tired and everything fell from the air including her.
She tumbled off the stone below, as she landed awkwardly on the grass. She felt more confused than anything, as she picked herself up. The man chuckled, and she spoke to herself; still distracted.
“I wonder what I did wrong?”
“Try holding your status tag and closing your eyes.”
She finally looked at him and noticed he was a muscular bear beastkin with black hair and brown eyes. He wore a simple, white cotton garb with a black cloth sash; it reminded her of a gi, but she could not remember where she heard that term before. She nodded and pulled her necklace out of her shirt to take the metal tab into her hand, before she closed her eyes and concentrated.
A strange list appeared in her mind's eye, several items appeared bold. The first was her depleted mana, secondly she noticed her experience had increased by one. Upon further study she noticed all her magic schools had increased by three, while spacial magic had increased by seven.
She noticed a new skill called multicasting at ten and a new spell named float at eighteen. All the values started at zero except her stats, so she instantly felt accomplished. The young girl nodded again, as she opened her eyes and spoke.
