Zatiel woke from a sound sleep. Her nightmares had not plagued her since she began training. She went to bed early the night before and had planned something new for today, since both her instructors informed her they could no longer provide her with further training the day before. She had finished the books her father purchased long ago and found herself wanting something more.
She washed herself and dressed without thinking, grabbing a piece of paper and stowing it in a pocket dimension; before she left her room behind. The pocket dimension spell opened a white portal to a small dimension for basic storage needs, while she could also cast the larger spell dimension box for an increased mana cost. Breakfast was not ready, so she cast greater haste on herself as she donned her sandals and gloves. She left the house in a blur and raced on all fours towards the sage's tower.
It was not long before she entered the tower's door and approached the public crystal basin located on the first floor. She retrieved the paper from her pocket dimension and removed her necklace, placing both into the basin. She focused a little mana into the basin and it shined like a rainbow briefly.
Gathering her things, she stowed the paper in her pocket dimension again and slipped the necklace over her head. Before anyone had time to notice her, she ran back out the door and down the road. She removed her sandals and gloves at the door, before she raced towards the dining room. She arrived as her mother was setting the table, released the haste spell, and sat down as her father spoke.
“Where did you wander off so early this morning?”
She grinned and answered, “The sage's tower.”
He looked curious as one of his ears twitched and asked, “What business did you have there?”
With a smirk she cast pocket dimension and retrieved the paper from before, passing it to her father. Her mother placed a plate of food in front of her, and her tail wiggled happily. She looked up at her mother with a smile and said.
“Thank you for the food.”
“You're welcome, dear.”
As she began to eat, her father spoke proudly, “I see your studies have progressed.”
She finished chewing and swallowed, before she answered, “Yes, Sir. My instructors told me they can't train me further, and I've finished all the books you purchased. To keep improving I'll need to travel to Venice. I want to have a custom shield made before I go, but I would like your permission to go there before the next term.”
“Why do you want to go early?”
“I want to get a start on darkness magic and have a curved sword made. I have other reasons, but they are not worth mentioning. When I start at the academy, I won't have much spare time for self-indulgent pursuits.”
He sighed and said, “Self-indulgent pursuits… you know, I've been spending a lot of coin on you and I see no end in sight. Why should I add fuel to this fire?”
“I know that, father. I appreciate your generosity and understand your dilemma. There will be an end, though. I plan on working at the adventurer's guild and selling enchantments during any free time I have in Venice. I want to finish at the academy early, it's the whole reason I've been studying so hard. I'm sure you have your reasons for spending so much…”
He laughed and shook his head, before he answered, “You're right. You're by far the most impressive talent born of this family in generations. It has been an investment.”
She perked up and interjected, “One I intend to pay back and won't let go to waste.”
“Fine,” he conceded, “we can go to town today and commission your special shield. You'll leave for Venice after it is completed, but you owe me. Not gold, but a favor of my choosing.”
