After Zatiel ate breakfast at the tavern downstairs, she went back to her room and equipped herself with leather armor. She went to the sage's tower and got an updated status page, before she headed to the adventurer's guild. The receptionist accepted the status page and updated her information with the guild, but replaced her temporary card with an official fledgling badge with a number on it.
“Thank you, Efil. I do have a few questions about how all this works,” said Zatiel, as she accepted the badge from the elf and attached it on her shirt over her shoulder.
The woman tucked long green hair behind her pointed ear and smiled, as she replied, “Sure, how about I give you the rundown and you can let me know if you have any more questions?”
“Sounds good to me.”
“First, the guild keeps track of everything you do regardless of where you are, so if you turn in a bounty or quest at a guild it counts everywhere. Adventurers all start out as fledglings, after you complete a certain number of requests you'll get promoted to a novice. After novice, comes full-fledged, superior, elite, honorary, and master. A fledgling can only accept fledgling quests, while it works differently with bounties.”
“So I can turn in any bounty I manage to do, but I can only do quests that match my rank?”
“Kind of, you can also accept quests below your rank if you want. Bounties are criminal targets available to anyone. Quests are for monsters and sometimes materials from monster infested environments. To complete quests you will need to bring back the magical cores or materials. All monsters have magical cores. Higher ranked quests have better payouts.”
“Okay, where do I start?”
“Well, you did a great job in Calburn with those bandits according to our records. If you're looking for a quest you can go to the forest in the south. There's been reports of goblins, slimes, and wolves out there. Whatever you decide, I suggest you find a party.”
“Okay, how do I get the magical cores?”
“Take a knife and cut them out of the goblins’ chests. It's in the same place the heart should be, slimes are easier. For wolves you bring back their pelts as proof. Don't forget to loot the goblins if they have good equipment, anything metal can be sold at a blacksmith. We will pay you for every core and pelt you manage to bring back, you can even get paid for gathering the herbs you find there.”
“Got it. Thank you again, Efil.”
“No problem, don't forget to get supplies before you head out. Good luck, Zatiel.”
The kitten waved and made for the door, as she retrieved the map from her pocket dimension. After looking it over, she decided to visit the general store first. She bought some jerky, cloth sacks, and water skins.
Afterwards, she visited Dargun's smithy and bought a balanced hunting knife. The dwarf gave her a leather belt to attach the sheath to her hip as well. Her next stop was the academy.
She was surprised at how big it was; three four-story stone buildings surrounded by a wall. At the gate, she was stopped by a guard. The human questioned her.
“You don't look like a student. What's your business?”
“I'm here to visit my brother. I'm attending here next term.”
“Alright, go into the center building and talk to the receptionist at the desk just inside. Don't cause trouble.”
“Okay. Thanks.”
She made her way through the large courtyard to the center building and easily found the desk. There she found a dwarf woman. Zatiel smiled and asked.
“Hello, can you tell me where I can find Clint Vexica? He's my brother, and I'm here for a visit.”
