Jhené Capri-Taylor
"Mommy, a just downstairs mi a go" I argued with my mother.
She nuh stop act like mi big and heavy and cyaah travel up and down the stairs mi self.
"Every minute yaah walk up and down Jhené", she worryingly says.
"Because I have to"
"I know, Dre hasn't reached back yet?"
"No"
He left early in the morning and hasn't come back, his brothers came to get him to sort something out.
"By the way" I say to her, "why was it so easy for you guys to write me off to him?".
"Weh yuh mean?"
"Yuh know, Grandma was alright with it, Daddy and then you just make it seem like it was pre-planned"
She laughs nervously, "why would you think that?".
"Mommy"
"Babe, it's all in the past, it wasn't pre-planned though"
"What's in the past Mommy?".
Why mi start feel like a sell dem sell me off to him?.
A could never that.
"Yuh know why yuh fada did stay with Stacey so long?"
Weh dat have fi do wid anything?.
"No, always figured it was for Naomi"
"Not really", she let out a heavy breath, "your father started working for Chinna's father a long time ago, he wasn't mixed up but they could have hurt you if he refused to work with them, Stacey found out about how he made most of his money, cause yuh know Malcolm have money like that".
"I do, he's a great electrician"
"And a great marksman too, anyway, she threatened him with all the evidence and said she would send him to prison or have him killed if he ever tried to leave her, he didn't mind that until she threatened your life, Jhené, I wasn't really in any position to take you because of my living conditions at the time, it was after I met Curt that my life turned around and I was able to travel and send you money".
".....Malcolm stopped working for Jonathan and started working for Chinna, that was when he really started to make money. Stacey went straight to Jonathan and made a complaint, we had no idea she was sleeping with him either, she and her daughter dutty just alike".
"Mi yaah tell, cause Naomi did a deh wid Jonathan son a while ago, dem nasty".
"If Malcolm left her, I wouldn't have been able to come back and he would have died, dem wuda kill you too".
I frowned hearing all this, my father was going through all this?.
That's why he couldn't do anything about the abuse she inflicted on me?.
And bet him never tell Chinna about it, maybe Chinna did all too young to do anything about it either.
Cause from what I've gathered, they had it pretty rough growing up with their fathers.
Especially Chinna, no wonder he loved the family he created with his best friends.
"But what does Dre have to do with it?" I asked her, still puzzled about why they let me be with him.
"When he first arrived, he did a lot, including getting your father out of a contract, you might not know it, but there was a war in Constant Spring involving Dre, he was shot and your grandmother helped him, he asked her what he could do for her in return".
