"hey mom, you got a second?" i asked, knowing that my brothers are out for a little.
"i've always got time for my youngest, whats up luke?"
i hopped up onto the kitchen countertop that she just wiped down.
"i met this girl." i said.
"you met a girl." she smiled and nodded.
"remember the nhl artist?" i asked.
"yes."
"its her."
"you met her one time." she said.
"yeah," i chuckled. "weve been texting."
"oh, so thats why youve been smiling at your phone."
i rolled my eyes.
"i like her mom."
"where is she?"
"texas. shes from texas but shes attending umich." i said.
"oh, whats her name again?"
"sunny lexington."
she nodded, "so you met her at the program?"
"yeah and her eyes are two different colors!"
"what else?"
"she's insanely talented!" i said, pulling up her website to show her.
"whats her major?" she asked, scrolling through her artwork.
"therapy or art? she wants to teach others that art can be therapy."
"aw, how kind."
"she really is."
she's actually the best.
"and she's 100% attending umich?" she questioned.
"yes."
"why dont we have her over for dinner when she moves in? her parents too." she offered.
"she has younger siblings." i said.
"well we'd love to have her family over." she smiled.
the drafts next week, meaning i could only play in michigan for a season or before going to whatever city drafts me.
jack & quinn walked in the kitchen, staring at me.
"oh my god, youve got a girl!" jack pointed.
"what?"
"hey quinn, lukeys got a girl!" jack said, calling quinn in the kitchen.
"no way." quinn said.
"okay neither of you dont have a girl." i said back.
"but you do." jack said.
"i wasn't talking to you about her, i was talking to mom."
"who is she?" quinn asked.
"dude just stop." i said, hopping off the counter and leaving the kitchen.
"you need to be nicer to him." i heard my mom say.
"cmon, hed do the same to us." quinn protested.
i went into the second living room that we game in.
"who is she?" jack asked.
"no one you need to know about."
sunny met both jack & quinn.
shes knows them both.
jack sat next to me, he opened his phone to a tiktok video.
"whose that?"
"oh no one." he said as he liked her video and swiped to the next one, which was the same girl.
i looked back at my phone, my thumbs waiting to text her but i have no clue what to say.
hey dinner at my parents? hey dinner with my parents & your parents? hey when you move into your dorm my parents want to meet you. i told my mom about you.
are all the options i came up with but cant ask right now because im scared.
we haven't talked in a few days but thats because shes busy.
i am too.
and were not dating so theres no need in texting every second of everyday.
so i locked my phone and picked up the controller.
but now i want to text, i want to talk to her. i want to know if shes painting or with friends, what headbands shes wearing, and if birkenstocks are her favorite shoes.

"whats that smile for?" my mom asked.
"huh?" i asked, quickly wiping the look off my face.
"you're sitting at the table, you got your feet on the table, one hand twirling your hair, with a smile on your face, who are you talking to?" she laughed.
"a boy."
"a boy?!" she sang.
"yes and that's all you need to know right now."
"mhm, does his name start with an m?" she questioned.
"no its not max."
she made a shocked face.
"not max? but max is the only
boy youve ever loved.""um no," my dad said, walking in. "i was first, i was the first boy she loved & still loves and will always love you first & more."
i rolled my eyes, "yes."
"so who is he?" he asked.
"ryan, her feet are on the table." my mom pointed out.
"eh, who is he?" he said, completely ignoring my unladylike table manners.
"umm." i laughed.
"sunny." he poked at my leg.
"ummmmm." i laughed again.
"dont pester her ryan." my mom laughed.
"fine...hes not one of my players, right?"
"ill only make that mistake once." i promised.
"hockey player?"
"maybe." i smiled.
