lukes playing this week so he doesn't get a thanksgiving break.

i flew home to texas.

its night 1 of being home and theres a knock at the front door.

"sunny, thats for you." my mom said.

i got up and went to open it, but i could already see who it was.

i got a pep in my step and opened the door eagerly.

"max!"

i hugged him and he squeezed me back.

"oh my god! ive missed you."

"tell me about it." he chuckled.

i shut the front door behind me, thinking that were going for a sweet treat trip.

"where are we going? oh let me put shoes on!"

"actually, i came here to talk." he said.

"oh okay, um, where do you want to talk?" i asked.

he pointed to the steps and i nodded.

we both sat down, not looking at eachother.

"whats up m?" i said first after a moment of silence.

"i miss you." he said.

"i miss you too."

"i think," he paused and then sighed. "well i dont think, i know that ive pushed my feelings away from you because i knew the rules we made when we were kids. we dont date."

oh no.

"but being away from you made me realize that you're all i want."

oh no.

as if he could read the look on my face when we made eye contact, he knew the answer.

"you dont feel the same?" he nervously laughed.

"no max." i said.

"no its fine. i should of known."

"max, i met someone. im with someone."

"oh." he said.

"im sorry." i said, wanting to cry.

"why are you sorry, you clearly followed the rules."

my mouth opened but no words came out.

"he goes to umich too?" he asked.

"yeah." i nodded. "he plays for the hockey team."

he looked away from me, staring into the yard again.

"hes great max. treats me the same why you treat me." i told him.

"who is he?"

"luke hughes."

"yeah." he replied.

"im sorry." i said again.

"i ruined our friendship, huh?" he asked.

"no." i shook my head.

"be honest."

i turned into him, our legs touching.

"i think we both knew that one of us would find love at college." i said.

"yeah but eere drifting apart."

"you're here, aren't you?" i questioned.

"yeah because i told you i loved you and now im a fool." he stood up.

"max, it doesn't have to be like this." i said.

"adeline, i dont-"

"adeline? you never call me that." i said, standing up.

"im sorry. i need time to think."

"max." i said, eyes filling with tears.

"see you around sunny."

i watched him get into his car and i wanted to chase after him but i cant.

and when his taillights disappeared into the distance, want went inside.

"you okay sunny?" my dad asked.

"no," he's already on his feet and heading to me.

"what happened?"

he hugged me so i cried into his chest.

"max loves me and im with luke."

"oh." he said.
