ੈ✩‧₊˚I wanted to get in his head. I wanted to know, to know what nightmares haunt him every night, to do more than just stand by and watch him go through this. I wanted to do more than hug him to me right now, whispering promises that I wasn't sure were true.
"It's okay," I breathed out, tightening my hold on Kai's shivering body, feeling his shaky breathing against the crook of my neck as I rubbed my hand up and down his back, "you're alright, I'm here."
"They— they all feel so real," he gasped out, his fingers loose around my sweater, his weight getting heavier all of a sudden like he was about to pass out, "I— I can't—"
"Shh," I quickly leaned back, holding his face between my hands, my heart sinking when I saw how glassy his eyes looked, tears welling up as his gaze roamed around, not able to focus on one thing. He didn't even have time to head to the bathroom away from me tonight, he kept shifting in his sleep, so bad that it woke me up, and before I could do anything he woke up gasping, shivering before I quickly hugged him to me, "it's not real, it's just a bad dream. Just focus on breathing with me, alright?"
"Emmaline—"
"Listen to me," I said firmly, swallowing past the lump in my throat as I sharpened my gaze on him, my hands still on both sides of his face, holding him in place, "nothing is real, alright? Nothing at all. It's just you and me. There's nothing else that matters except that, okay? Just breathe with me, can you do that? I just want you to this one thing for me."
I was going to lose my mind, I was going to die watching him suffer like this. I hated seeing him torn apart that way. If it was up to me, I'd rather have the world burn down than him having a single nightmare ever again. I'd watch it all go down in flames just for him to be okay.
"You're doing great," I murmured, my voice barely a whisper as I brushed my thumbs over his cheeks, willing him to focus on the present moment, focus on his breathing. I watched his chest begin to move up and down slower, his trembling hands clutch onto my sweater.
"Emmaline," he breathed under his breath, shaking his head as tears slipped from his eyes, sending a bang to my heart. I hated this. I despised the reason behind these dreams, I wanted to pry inside his head, to snatch these nightmares and tear them to pieces, to burn them down.
"Yes, habibi?" I wiped away the tears with my thumbs, "what is it?"
I'm so tired, I heard him think. I don't even know if he reached out for me or if I accidentally heard his thoughts like I seemed to do with everyone these days, unintentionally living in everyone's head at the same time until it became too crowded for even my thoughts to be there.
"Kai, what are those dreams about?" I finally sighed, one of my hands going to brush his hair away from his forehead, "hmm?" I tilted my head, "if you tell me then maybe I can help you."
