"I THOUGHT THIS WOULDN'T be difficult until we actually got there," Soleil groaned.
She and her sister stood in her room, still in their pajamas, with half of Soleil's wardrobe on the ground. Star wasn't being much help, claiming everything her sister owned was "too princessy".
"Ugh it's all just so... royal!" Star complained, tossing a short sequin dress in the pile.
"Star, we are princesses! We live in a castle for crying out loud!" Soleil argued. "I'm wearing what I want, please leave."
"Fine! I'm not letting you leave when you get laughed at," Star said, turning to walk out of the room.
Soleil sighed, finally able to relax without Star breathing down her neck. She took advantage of the convenience she was given and used her wand to sort her clothes back into their place.
She decided on toning down what she would normally go for. A white tshirt with a blue pull-over dress and mary jane's. She kept her hair down and curled, opting out of her normal pony tail.
The teen gathered her things, a prepacked backpack gifted to her by the Diaz's, and her wand. Downstairs she was only met with more chaos, a sleep deprived Mrs. Diaz cooking breakfast, Mr. Diaz speaking spanish loudly on the phone, and a group of puppies with... laser eyes?
"Good morning Mrs. Diaz," Soleil greeted, setting her backpack on the couch.
"Oh good morning Soleil! How did you sleep?" the woman asked, stirring what seemed to be a pot of mush.
"I slept well thank you... what are you cooking there?" she asked in a nervous tone.
"It's oatmeal! It's an Earth breakfast delicacy," Mrs. Diaz shared, easing the girls nerves a little.
The blonde sat at the table, watching Mrs. Diaz cook as if nothing was happening around her. As for Soleil, the puppies were starting to give her a headache, and Mr. Diaz's loud wails of laughter were louder than her own thoughts.
Marco and Star came downstairs together five minutes later, only adding to the chaos of the already rowdy house. Star, despite the state of it, would not stop using her wand for every simple task. She would cast a cloudy charm to carry her backpack only for it to fall green and sick a minute later.
"Star, maybe relax on the wand usage for now? Cloudy doesn't look so hot," the younger advised, watching as Cloudy slowly drooped to the ground with Star's backpack.
"Whatever," she mumbled, flicking her want and sending Cloudy back home. "Thanks for the oatmeal Mrs. D."
Mrs. Diaz placed a bowl of hot mush in front of each kid. Star and Marco dug in immediately, while Soleil pushed hers around the bowl. She took small bites from time to time, and enjoyed it quite frankly, but she was never much of a breakfast person.
"You kids should be off soon. Bus'll be here any minute," Mr. Diaz said.
"What's a bus?"
✶✶✶
It turns out the bus was the worst form of transportation Soleil would ever come to know.
She sat in the filth around her, pressed to a window with, she could only guess to be, seven hundred other kids in the same vehicle.
Marco sat next to her, choosing to be the buffer between her and Star after their almost full out brawl before they left the house. Who knew wearing the same coat could cause a falling out for multiple generations.
"Why didn't you tell me this was how we had to get to school? I could've cut us a portal!" Soleil griped, wiping off whatever sticky substance she had set her hand in onto the back of the seat in front of her.
"Sorry. Star said you wanted to experience everything Earth had to offer. Even the bad stuff! Which I'm realizing right now, might have just been so she could get on your nerves. Whoops," Marco shrugged. "Don't worry. There's only about five more minutes until we get there."
Soleil leaned back in her seat with a huff, trying to focus on the view out the window instead of the way whoever was behind her was jabbing their knees into the back of her seat.
The princess had to admit, Earth was quite breath taking. At times. The trees were gorgeous, and the landscaping of each residential yard was kept neat and tidy, but that changed once they moved into the city.
While still charming in its own way, there were a lot more... flaws. There was trash and stray cats on nearly every corner, homeless people sleeping in the doorways of shops, and all sorts of strangely dressed people.
Marco explained that it had more to do with the state they lived in, whatever a state was, rather than the actual city itself.
Suddenly, the bus came to a lurching stop, causing Soleil to smack into the seat in front of her, and subsequently the sticky substance she had wiped there previously.
"This day is going so great."
✶✶✶
It turns out the bus was actually a safe haven compared to the rest of the school. All day long Soleil could not make her way down a single hall without people yelling at her, giving her looks, bumping into her, or coming up to ask her questions about being Star's sister. It was getting quite exhausting.
After three very long, excruciating periods it was finally time for lunch. Soleil made her way to the cafeteria, earning no less six curious glances on her way there. Several whispers were passed around, a common one being she was sent here because she was kicked out of her former school.
Teenagers. They hear one little rumor and run with it.
Once she entered the crowded room, it was not hard to spot her sister and Marco. Star literally could not go anywhere without skipping, and not to mention her bright blonde hair was a beacon along the sea of brunettes.
Soleil pushed her way through the crowd, ending up at the end of a long line. She searched for her sister, fining her a few people in front of her and used her kindest smile to work her way there.
Marco and Star were waiting for their food, along with the girl from the taco shop.
"Hey guys," Soleil huffed, pushing her slightly messy hair behind her ear. She should've kept it up.
"Hey Soleil! How's your day been?" Marco asked.
Since the princess was a year younger than them, she didn't share any classes with the four of them. It was hard at first, but once she got used to taking a seat at the back of the class and trying to avoid eye contact things got... basically the same.
"So awesome," she smiled. "The people here are just peachy."
Marco grinned, patting her on the back, "See I told you it wasn't gonna be so bad."
Soleil nodded, picking up her tray to give to the lunch lady. She smiled and said thank you as she was served what seemed to be a slice of pizza and some sort of fruit.
The group made their way to their usual lunch table and Soleil did nothing more than poke around at her food, thinking about the three other classes she still had to fight through.
