AFTER HER FIRST DAY of school, it was safe to say Soleil much preferred Mewman Princess Academy over Earth high school. Alas, she was forced to go on Monday.
The bus ride there was always the worst part, though it was only her second ride she swore it was her least favorite form of transportation. Soleil would take the slightly sick feeling of portal traveling any day over the rambunctious yellow box.
She sat in silence next to Marco, staring out the window, praying for the ride to end soon. Thankfully her wishes were answered and just five minutes after they got on they were at Echo Creek Academy.
This day seemed different from Friday however, because as they filed off the bus everyone seemed to fall into a line outside the door labeled 'Guidance Counselor'.
"What are we getting in line for?" Soleil asked, taking a seat beside Marco and Star.
"It's career day! The counselor is gonna tell us what future path he thinks we'll be best for," Marco explained, seeming far more excited than he should have.
Even though she already knew what she was going to do, become princess of Mewni with her sister as Queen of course, Soleil stayed in line anyways. At least this way she didn't have to go to first period.
Oscar Martinez strode out of the room, playing a simple song on his keytar. "Mr. Candle said I'm gonna be a musician!"
"Sweet! He said I'm gonna be a champion swimmer," one of the boys on the swim team responded, fist bumping Oscar's instrument.
Soleil could never figure out why everyone was okay with the swim team wearing their uniform everyday, which might as well have been underwear, but no one said anything so neither did she.
Star wiggled excitedly in her seat, hopping up as she was next in line. "I can't wait to see what my future holds," she squealed as she bounced into the counselors office.
As Soleil waited for her, she took a moment to observe the people around her. There were all kinds of people that went to this school, nerds, jocks, popular girls, hippies, Janna. It surprised her that they were all able to be so different yet get along enough to be in the same room.
At her old school, if you didn't fit in well enough with the other princesses you were either bullied enough to switch schools or simply shunned from the group.
"What do you think your career is gonna be?" Soleil was startled from her thoughts as Janna appeared beside her, a fully lit candle in her hand.
"Oh my god, Janna, you scared me," Soleil said, clutching her chest. She lent forward slightly, blowing out the candle the eery girl was holding. "That is a fire hazard."
"Whatever killjoy, it's a present for Mr. Candle. Get it? Cause it's a candle?" Janna smirked, the blonde giving her an unimpressed look.
"Yes, Janna I get it."
A loud bang caught their attention, the two turning to see Star walking out of the office with a crestfallen look on her face. She ignored Marco who asked her what happened, and headed straight for the front doors.
"Well I'm guessing it couldn't have been anything good," Soleil said awkwardly, a forced laugh falling from her lips.
"My turn then I guess," Marco said, getting up and brushing the sweat from his palms to his jeans. "Wish me luck."
And suddenly, Soleil was left alone with Janna.
It was nerve wracking enough to be with the spiritual girl with other people around, but alone? Soleil wasn't sure she could stomach her energy. She spared a glance at the girl, only to find that Janna was already staring back at her with a smile.
"So, what can you tell me about Mewnie and the secrets of your families magical history?" the short haired girl asked, startling Soleil with the detail of her question.
"Well, I'm the youngest Butterfly daughter, but I will be Queen one day and Star will take my side as princess until I find a prince," Soleil explained, giving basics. "If she doesn't run away before that."
"Yeah, yeah, whatever. That's surface layer, go deeper," Janna pushed. "Like is there a family secret that goes back generations that could jeopardize life as you know it should it get out?"
The princess sat shocked, her mouth agape and eyes wide. How did she know?
"I mean I can't go into much detail but-"
"You're kidding!" the teens turned their attention to an angry Marco, storming his way out of the Counselors office. "Trash collector on Garbage Island?! This guy doesn't know what he's talking about," he fumed.
Soleil looked at him with pity, rising to let him take her seat seeing as Janna was in his original one.
"It's okay Marco. You don't need to do what the high school guidance counselor tells you. This is just... plan d!" she encouraged, turning to head in for her turn.
The second she walked in, she could tell this guy was something unique. There was an eerie mist engulfing the room, created by the incense diffuser in the corner.
The counselor, a middle aged man with a long grey ponytail and beard to match, sat behind a large wooden desk. His hands were folded nearly on top, a sort of smug smile finding its way onto his face.
A golden plaque sat on the desk, exclaiming in big letters 'MR. CANDLE'. Soleil took her seat in the comfortable armchair in front of him, preparing for a conversation she had had with her parents time and time again.
"Ah, the second Butterfly sister! Princess Soleil. It's a pleasure," Mr. Candle held out his hand, prompting the blonde to shake it.
"It's very nice to meet you Mr. Candle. I'm anxious for our chat today," Soleil mused.
"And whys that?" he asked, leaning back in his chair and sipping from his '#1 Counselor' mug.
"Well I just kind of already know where I'm going and generally what my future holds," she said, tucking a loose strand of hair behind her ear. "I just feel well prepared already."
"I wouldn't get so comfortable just yet," Mr. Candle said, a suddenly serious tilt to his words. "You know, Star could pull her act together before you take the throne and your Queen future could be nonexistent all together."
For the third time in the last ten minutes, Soleil sat shocked in front of this man. She couldn't believe what she was hearing. Since when is her future not guaranteed?
"And what do you suppose I'll do should that happen?" she asked timidly, worried about his answer.
"There's always other options," he claimed, pulling several pamphlets from seemingly nowhere to show her the 'options'. "You can honestly take your pick. Alternative counsel member, princess school teacher, or of course you could step down all together and live a happy civilian life."
Soleil huffed, snatching the stack of pamphlets off Mr. Candles desk. "Thank you for your time but I think this conversation was pointless. Have a good day."
The princess whipped around, storming out of the office and following the path of her sister. What was up with that man?
