"I can't leave rach. you have to understand." anna pleaded, trying to make morgan desperately understand that while yes, she suprisingly did want to leave with him, she simply couldn't leave her best friend. it was girl code.

"hey, hey, i get it, sweet thing. no worries, i'm with you all night." morgan muttered to her, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. "probably should go get her before she orders another one of those margaritas from charlie, though. one more of those and she's done for." morgan laughed to himself as he pictured anna holding back rachel's hair as she threw up the contents of her stomach.

"oh god, you're right." anna gasped, quickly turning on her heel to head for the bar. before she took off, she reached behind her, fingers splayed and wiggling. morgan immediately understood, taking her hand and following closely behind her.

rachel was, in fact, at the bar with charlie. she was trying to order another margarita but charlie was hounding her with questions, trying to make her forget what she wanted.

"rach!" anna called for her as she neared, throwing her free arm around her friend's shoulder.

"annie baby! hiiiii! will you tell charlie that i want another margarita? it's not that hard to make." rachel slurred out.

she was definitely drunk and another margarita was the last thing she needed.

"how about a glass of water, charlie?" anna questioned, her eyes glancing up at the bartender who was looking at the threesome. he nodded his head immediately, reaching around for a glass.

as he slid the glass across the bar to anna, she mouthed him a 'thank you' to which he only nodded and smiled at her.

morgan was rubbing rachel's back and listening her to explain how she had first fallen in love with him and his long hair on the voice and had been a fan ever since.

"rach, drink this. i'm gunna call jason, okay?" rachel's eyes widened around the rim of the glass she had taken a small sip from.

"yes, call jason but he can't see me with morgan. he'll think i finally left him for you like i always say i will, given the chance." rachel exclaimed, lightly shoving morgan's chest away from her. she gasped and reached out again, poking at his stomach.

he laughed at her antics, reaching down to grip her wrist to stop her. he intertwined their fingers together and rachel winked up at him from her seat at the bar.

two glasses of water and three stories about how anna originally turned her nose up to morgan's music later, and jason was waiting outside the bar to pick rachel up and uber her back to her and anna's shared apartment.

morgan walked the girls to the door of the bar, waiting just inside at rachel's insistence. anna gave him a smile, ensuring that she would be outside and back in no time.

just as she disappeared from his sight, a rough hand grabbed his shoulder, shaking him slightly.

"now, wait one damn minute!" ben snarled, his voice laced with a dangerous edge. he had shoved the blonde he'd been charming aside and strode towards morgan with a purpose as soon as he realized anna was walking rachel out.

he wanted to get morgan alone.

morgan straightened, the playful facade slipping away. his gaze, which had been warm on anna just moments before, turned steely cold.

"something i can help you with, bud?" he drawled, his voice low and dangerous.

"this whole charade," ben spat, gesturing wildly between the door anna had just disappeared through and morgan. "you think i don't know what's going on here? you're just some washed-up singer anna picked up at a bar to get back at me because she's jealous and wants me back."

"washed up?" morgan scoffed at the accusation.

"yeah, washed-up," ben persisted, his voice rising. "you probably can't even afford a real bar."

morgan's jaw clenched, and the people who had started to surround the pair could see a flicker of anger ignite in his blue eyes. but before morgan could respond, anna pushed beside him and stepped forward, her voice surprisingly calm.

"look, ben," she started, "it's clear you're still upset about things, and that's fine. but making a scene and insulting morgan isn't going to change anything. i'm still here with him and not you."

ben scoffed.

"oh, it changes plenty. this whole thing just proves what i always knew about you, anna. you're just good at playing pretend. you couldn't handle a real relationship, so you run off with some glorified cowboy hat."

"oh, that's rich coming from whatever the fuck is sitting on top of your head right now."

"ah, there she is. always gotta deflect away from yourself with some insult, right, anna? it hides your own insecurities well. the truth is, i got so sick of always dealing with them, i went out and found a real woman who's confident enough to not have to argue like a baby." ben spit back at her.

the sting of his words struck a chord in anna. but before she could wallow in self-pity, morgan spoke.

"that's enough," he said, his voice a low growl.  he took a step towards ben, his towering height and broad shoulders making the ex-boyfriend seem even smaller. morgan grasped the front of ben's shirt in both of his fists tightly.

"you disrespect her, you disrespect me."

ben puffed up his chest in a pathetic attempt to appear intimidating.

"yeah? and what are you gonna do about it, mr. big shot?"

morgan didn't resort to violence.  instead, he leaned in close to ben, his voice dropping to a low murmur that sent shivers down anna's spine despite the underlying threat.

"let me tell you something," he said, "a real man doesn't cheat on the woman he loves. and a real man doesn't treat a woman the way you treated anna."

ben's face drained of color. the confident swagger he'd displayed moments ago had vanished, replaced by a flicker of fear.  before he could muster a retort, morgan released his shirt and shoved him backward.

ben, his bravado shattered, mumbled something inaudible and slunk back towards the blonde girl and his group of friends.

morgan cleared his throat and glanced around, the group dissipating rapidly around the pair. he straightened, taking his hat off and running a hand through his hair.

"sorry you had to see all that," he said to anna, his voice gentler now. he wouldn't meet her eyes either.

anna shook her head, a wave of gratitude wash over her. she fit her small hand gently under morgan's chin, pulling up lightly. he raised his head and slowly met her eyes.

"thanks for sticking up for me," she said, her voice softer than she intended. she was giving him a smile that was doing everything but melting his insides.

morgan offered a lopsided grin in return.

"you're welcome, pretty girl," he said, his gaze lingering on her for a beat longer than necessary.  the playful spark was back in his eyes, but this time, there was a hint of something else – maybe curiosity, maybe something more.

the bar had suddenly lost its appeal. the music sounded discordant, the air stale. anna glanced at morgan, then at the door.

"so... take me home?" she nodded towards the door with her head, her wild hair falling down around her face. morgan snaked his arm around her waist and pulled her flush against his body.

"i thought you'd never ask." he muttered, his eyes sparkling and a wide grin resting on his lips.
