The Pollywog

The next morning, Logan got up and had breakfast with his family before heading to school.

Logan parked his bike in one of the bike racks and headed inside to find Lucas, but he quickly found Max. The redhead walked up to him and asked. "What was that last night? What happened to him?" Logan gulped and began to tell her what exactly happened. "A year ago, Will got lost in the woods for a week and it was a very traumatic experience for him, so he has these episodes every now and then." Logan explained. He shut his locker and began to walk down the hallway. "Wait, I still don't get why they call him zombie boy. I mean, I get it. He got lost in the woods for a week or something, but why a zombie? Because everyone thought he was dead?" Max asked. "Yeah, pretty much. We had a funeral for him." Logan answered. "After a week?" Max asked. "Well, there was another kid who drowned at the quarry, everyone thought it was Will, because his body was decomposed, and could not be identified." Logan explained. "What? Okay, that's not funny." Max said stopping and turning to look at Logan. "It is the truth. Everyone knows. Its just public knowledge. You can ask anyone but Will. It is a sensitive topic." Logan said. Max nodded. The two young teens then walked to Mr Clarke's room. They sat in their usual spots. "The case of Phineas Gage is one of the great medical curiosities of all time. Phineas was a railroad worker who had a nightmarish accident. A large iron rod was driven completely through his head. Phineas miraculously survived. He seemed fine. And physically, yes, he was. But his injury resulted in a complete change to his personality. So much so the friends that knew him started referring to him as 'No Longer Gage.' At the time, this was known as the American Crowbar Case. Although it wasn't a--" Mr Clarke got cut off by the door swinging open and Dustin ran in. "I'm so sorry Mr Clarke. Really, I'm so sorry. Please continue with the class. Don't mind me. Really, continue, please. Thanks." Dustin said as he got situated, before turning around. "We have to meet. All of us. At lunch, AV Club." Dustin said. "Why?" Mike questioned. "I have something you won't believe." Dustin said making Logan nod. Logan turned back to his notes. "Dustin!" Mr Clarke called out. "Yes, my lord?" Dustin turned his attention to Mr Clarke. "Care to join to join the class now?" Mr Clarke asked. "Please, yes." Dustin said making Logan throw his head back in a light chuckle. Dustin got to the right page and paid attention to what Mr Clarke was talking about.

At lunch time, the six young teens gathered in the AV Club room. Dustin brought out part of his Halloween costume and set it on the table. Dustin opened the doors. Inside the box was a lizard looking thing. "Dear god, what is that?" Logan asked. "His name is D'Artagnan." Dustin said. "Dear Jesus, you named it." Logan asked. Dustin nodded proudly, before reaching for the lizard. "Cute, right?" Dustin asked. "Yes, cute." Logan said unsure. "D'Artagnan?" Mike asked. "Dart for short." Dustin said. "And he was in your trash?" Max asked. "Foraging for food." Dustin added. "You wanna hold him?" Dustin asked. "No. No." Max said shaking her head. "Why not, hold him?" Logan said to Max. Dustin shoved dart into her hands. "Oh, God, he's slimy!" Max said before trying to hand him to Logan before Logan put his hands up and backed up from the creature. So, she passed him to Lucas. "Ugh, he's like a living booger." Lucas said handing him to Will. "Ugh, oh, God!" Will exclaimed handing him to Mike. Mike held the creature up to his face before asking, "What is he?" Mike asked looking at the creature in his hands. "My question exactly." Dustin said. Dustin placed books on the table sifting through them. "At first I thought he was a type of pollywog." Dustin said. "Pollywog?" Max asked. "Another word for tadpole." Logan said not looking at Max but instead Dustin. "A tadpole is a larval stage of a toad." Logan proceeded. "I know what a tadpole is." Max said. Logan smiled. "Oh, good, I was worried." Logan retaliated. "All right than you know that most tadpoles are aquatic, right? Well, Dart, he isn't. He doesn't need water." Dustin said flipping to the page he was looking for. "Yeah, but aren't there non aquatic pollywogs?" Lucas asked. "Terrestial pollywogs? Yep. Two to be exact. Indirana Semipalmata. And the Adenomera Andreae. One's from India, one from South America. So how did one end up in my trash?" Dustin explained. "Maybe some scientists brought it here, and it escaped?" Max asked. "Do you guys see that?" Mike asked looking at Dart. "Looks like something is moving inside of it." Mike continued. Everyone leaned over the table and Mike brought the lamp head over to the creature to see it better. The monster screeched. Everyone jumps back and the creature crawls across the table. Dustin caught the creature before it could jump off the table. "It's okay. It's okay. I got you little guy." Dustin said to Dart. "That's another thing. Reptiles, they're cold blooded. Ectothermic, right? They love heat, the sun. Dart hates it. It hurts him. So, if he's not a pollywog or a reptile..." Lucas trailed off. "Then I have discovered a new species." Dustin said petting the creature. Then the bell rang. The six kids scattered around the room grabbing their things, before walking out of the room. " We gotta show him to Mr. Clarke." Lucas stated. "No way, what if he tries to steal my discovery?" Dustin asked. "He's not going to steal your discovery." Mike said to Dustin. The teens were arguing all the way down the hallway when Logan felt a hand around his wrist. He looked back and saw Will. "You okay?" Logan asked Will. Will gulped and looked at him. Logan shook his head understanding exactly what was happening. "No, No." Logan said shaking his head. Will kept looking at him. "Son of a bitch." Logan breathed out.

Soon the end of the school day came around and Logan immediately found Will and Mike. "It's about D'Artagnan." Will said making Mike freeze and look at Logan who nodded. "Shit."

The three boys ran across the school to Mr. Clarke's room to get Dart and Dustin so the group could also be in the loop of what is going on. The boys busted in the room and Mike grabbed the box that Dart was inside and apologized to Mr.Clarke and told the others they needed to meet in the AV room right now before running off.

In the AV room Max was outside banging on the door, "Hello? Hello? Guys, come on. Can I come in yet?" Max asked outside the door. "No!" Mike yelled out. "I don't understand." Lucas said walking over to the table. "What are you not understanding?" Logan asked Lucas. "Will saw something that looked like Dart last year?" Lucas asked. "Kind of, but there was no tail." Will explained. "But then he heard it yesterday. The exact same sound." Mike said. "What didn't you tell us before?" Dustin asked. "I wasn't sure." Will said. "So it's a coincidence." Dustin said. "Or not. What if when will was stuck in the Upside Down, he somehow acquired true sight." Mike said. "True sight?" Lucas questioned. "It gives you the power to see into the ethereal plane." Dustin answered Lucas. "Elaborate." Lucas sighs. "Maybe these episodes Will keeps having aren't really flashbacks at all. Maybe they are real. Maybe Will can somehow see into the Upside Down." Logan said. "So that would mean..." Lucas trailed off. "Dart is from the Upside Down." Mike said. "We have to take him to Hopper." Lucas sighs. "I agree." Mike says as Logan nods. "No. No way. If we take him to Hopper, Dart's as good as dead." Dustin said. "Maybe he should be dead." Mike suggests. "How can you say that?" Dustin asks. "How can you not? He is from the Upside Down." Mike argued. "Maybe. But even if he is, it doesn't automatically mean that he is bad." Dustin defended. "That's just like saying just because someone is from the Death Star, doesn't make them bad." Mike told Dustin. "We have a bond." Dustin said softly. "A bond? Just because he likes nougat?" Mike asked getting louder as he speaks. "No, because he trusts me!" Dustin yells. "He trusts you?" Lucas asked slowly. "Yes, I promised that I would take care of him." Dustin said. Dart starts to screech which startles the boys. max is also banging on the door. The boys back away from the box that contains Dart on the table. Mike grabs the microphone on the table and holds it up. "Don't hurt him." Dustin states. "Only if he attacks." Mike says back. "Just open it already." Lucas exclaims. Dustin opens the box and Dart rolls out and screeches. "Holy shit!" Lucas states looking at the creature. Dart walks out of the box and pops a pair of legs from the creature. "Oh, Shit." Logan yells. Mike goes to hit Dart but Dustin pushes him out of the way. Dart falls on the ground and heads straight for the door that opens revealing Max. The boys run out of the room and Dustin crashes into Max while Logan jumps over them and starts to look down the hallway for Dart. "What was that?" Max asked. "Dart." Logan says starting to freak out. "You let him go!" Mike yells. Logan walked over to Mike and grabbed a hold of the back of Mike's collar and pushed him down the hall. "Come on, you can do this later, we have to find Dart. Split up we can cover more ground as you can." Logan said talking to everyone.

Logan looks down the halls and into the closets looking for Dart but he doesn't find the creature, not a trace. "I got nothing." Logan said into his supercomm. A couple of minutes later, "Guys. I found him." Will said through the supercomm. "Where?" Dustin asked. "In the bathroom by Mr. Salerno's." Will said and Logan began running to the bathroom, but when he got there Dustin was there. "You find Dart?" Logan asked. Dustin shook his head. "Where is Will?" Logan asked as the others showed up. Nobody knew so Logan ran out of the bathroom and began to look for Will.
