<Author's note: PLOT TWIST!>
II sat alone by the campfire, surrounded by people I used to call friends—more like toxic waste, honestly.
The boys were jabbering about the upcoming royal soccer league matches, their voices blending with the crackling fire. Sintarian Kingdom vs. Minganga was the hot topic.
Three years ago, soccer was my life and high school drama my soap opera. Now? I was just picking at my food, feeling like a total outsider.
You're probably wondering, "Kiran, what's got you in a funk?" Well, let's just say I had a little revelation that turned my world upside down.
After Pragyan dumped me and my so-called friends vanished, I made a discovery that should've stayed hidden.
One night, I went to drop off my test papers in my dad's desk. Instead, I found adoption papers with my name and theirs. Shocked much?
My real name? Kiran Yagyaseni. My real parents? Dead in a castle fire. And, surprise, I had an older brother named Ishaan Yagyaseni—newsflash, I had no clue about him.
My nightmares suddenly made sense. A small hand dragging me down burning corridors. A palace in flames. A motherly voice yelling, "Ishaan, take her and leave, now!"
Then, a male voice sobbing, "We won't make it, but Ishaan, run! Hide in the forest! We love you!" Followed by two muffled thuds. My parents' final moments.
Every page in those files was a punch to the gut. My adoptive parents, Amita Agarwal and Aarav Chopra, changed their names to match mine to keep me in the dark.
My adoptive brother, Rudra Agarwal, was in on it too. I'd been living a lie, a picture-perfect illusion far removed from the grim reality of my life.
I chewed my food with a sneer. "Oh, Kiran, isn't your life just a blast?" Shoved another bite in. Migraines kicked in. I stood up, wordlessly, and headed to my tent.
Nobody said a thing. They kept jabbering, glancing at me occasionally. I zipped myself into the tent, my only refuge.
The migraine pounded, echoing the chaos in my mind. Lying in the dark, I thought, "Yeah, Kiran, life's a real party. Keep pretending everything's fine."
Sometimes, dark humor is all you've got.
And right now, it's the only thing keeping me from losing it completely.
