10:05 on the dot.

umi hesitantly gives a few knocks on the door.

it was a be-all or end-all kind of moment for her.

the seconds passed, the tension rising.

just then, she heard a 'click'.

the door opens slightly ajar and a gust of cold air hit her face.

a chill ran down her spine, as she cautiously used her index finger to lightly push the door forward, her footsteps almost as light as a feather.

she ventures into the all too familiar room.

she knew she shouldn't be feeling this tense, this...cold.

but no matter how many times she entered this room, no matter how many memories she made here, this time... it felt different.

the girl she was waiting for was sitting cross-legged on the bed.

"hey."

the girl pats the bed, signalling umi to sit next to her.

if it were any normal day, umi would sprint and jump onto the bed, and animatedly talk about anything under the sun.

but today, it was different.

she took her time gathering the millions of thoughts running through her mind.

there were so many things she wanted to say, but only so many she could verbalise.

it felt like a achingly long eternity before she lightly sat herself on the bed.

it was almost in slow-mo - she slowly turned her head to face her once best friend.

she couldn't bear to look her in the eye, so she settled on chaewon's fingers that were resting on the bedsheet.

umi willed herself not to start crying. it took everything in her, just to mutter a short question: "why did you do it?"

she noticed chaewon's hands shaking. she sensed the unease.

she slowly looked up to chaewon's eyes.

they were full of an indescribable coldness.

it was like she had lost her.

chaewon decided not to take the round the bush route.
she took it seriously.

"i like him! you can't stop me from catching feelings, can you? would a best friend do that? would a best friend stop her best friend from going after what she wants?"

oh, she definitely lost her.

umi's lips quivered. it was a difficult time for her, and even more so when her ravenclaw best friend was shouting at her, blaming her.

but what hurt her most was the fact that she knew chaewon was right.

she couldn't, and shouldn't control her friend.

she decided that it was pointless trying to reconcile. after this conversation, they would never be the same again.

she stayed silent, stood up from the bed, and left without another word.

she lost another one.

🪄

but the anger still lingered.

it wasn't like she could avoid two lovebirds publicly sharing displays of affection everywhere they went. yes, even during mealtimes.

it was getting to her head, to the point she considered skipping lessons and staying in the common room instead.

but she knew better than to skip lessons. after all, there was always the end goal of ending at the top of her cohort.

as a form of toxic motivation, she convinced herself riki was distracting himself with chaewon, and so, she used this to her advantage.

🪄

unfortunately for nishimura riki, it got pretty out of hand quickly.

chaewon was getting clingy, and he didn't know how to control it. she was always hooking an arm around him, pestering him to follow her to classes, her dorm... he hardly had any time for himself.

he was never used to relationships that lasted this long.

but hey, any form of publicity is good publicity.

and so, he let her be.

but the guilt still lingered. he wished this would all be over soon.

continue this prank for another month, win the mischief competition, explain everything to umi, then get her back.

he wished he could do this any other way, and comfortably be in umi's arms right now. but he knew, it was the only way.

or was it?
