Moon POV
As expected, Moon woke up at 4:56 am.
By the time it was 6, Moon had just about wrapped up cleaning her room: sorting scrolls, making a mental note to wash the windows, clearing the desk of dirty bowls and plates, and patching up a hole in the wall (which explained where all the ants had been coming from lately).
All of which was done at a snail's pace. Just because the NightWing was awake didn't mean she was awake.
Seeing that it was still relatively dark, Moon decided to try to sleep again.
She woke up about three hours later and shuffled into the kitchen to make herself a cup of coffee.
She noticed that Winter was up as well, reading the newspaper.
"Morning," he greeted Moon. "There's still half a pot of coffee if you want some."
Only when half of it was gone did Moon remember to breathe.
"Thanks," she sighed. "Did you get the mail?"
Winter pointed to a pile on the table, which Moon began sorting through as she sat down.
"Oh, one thing," Winter said.
"Mmm?" Moon hummed absently as she sliced one letter open with a claw and flipped through it.
Spam mail from a particular dragon called Ludi Cruss.
She crumpled it up and tried to toss it into the trash can.
Made it.
"Okay, two things. First, I'm 90 percent sure all those letters are spam, but you're welcome to check."
"Uh-huh," Moon replied, crumpling up another letter from another dragon called Cray Zee and tossing it.
Made it.
"Second thing, I'm going on a business trip, and when I get back, uh, I think I'll have enough money to pay you back for the scrolls."
"Mmhm," Moon said casually as she tossed a third letter from Spam Mail (why on earth would a dragon be named that?).
Hit the rim; missed.
Moon frowned.
"...Wait, repeat what you said?" she asked, turning towards Winter.
"I said, I'm going on a business trip, and I'll have enough money to repay you when I return."
"...But today is Saturday?"
Winter shrugged. "I've already packed up. I'll be gone in a half hour or so."
"Oh...okay."
How come she was feeling disappointed?
And, uh, Winter's thoughts murmured. I can leave once I've repaid you and won't bother you again. We can both go about our merry ways.
Moon wasn't sure even Winter knew he was thinking that, but she frowned again.
Awhile later, Winter had left (and she had said "good luck") to him, and Moon had spent a few hours just reading and slumping about on the couch.
All the while the crisp tick-tock of the clock rang through the room.
Everything looked gray and monotone.
How quiet.
How depressing.
And now Moon wished Kinkajou hadn't gone on her blind date. The RainWing would be a welcome source of sound and company.
