You should have known better. A secret kept from an Original was doom waiting to happen.
"Elijah..." his name escaped your mouth when you entered your room in the Bayou and you hoped that the cheery hue of your voice managed to conceal the nervousness your treacherous thundering heart didn't. "I thought you would be out with your siblings."
A soft smile graced his lips, one that he seemed willing to share, when in the comfort of your presence. "Tomorrow marks two years of me courting you," he remarked, and you couldn't help but copy that smile.
"Feels like yesterday..." you admitted, both hating and loving how much you treasured those memories you two shared.
"I just wanted to leave this..." One of his hands took out a small box from his suit's pocket. "I wanted to leave this on your bedtable before I joined my siblings."
He handed you the box, and you eagerly opened it to find one of the most beautiful necklaces you had seen. It almost rivaled the one he had given you on the day he had "revealed" his true nature. It was laced with vervain, an unspoken promise that he would never force you to do something you would hate.
"Oh, Elijah..." Tears welled up and you didn't stop yourself from almost hurtling yourself into his embrace, his hands just as eager to wrap around your body.
"Thank you, I love it," you mumbled into his chest before you stepped away from him just enough so you could glance at his face. Your eyes met and he removed the box from your hands when you moved closer to him, to find his lips.
The box found itself home on your mattress just two steps away from your body after he tossed it there. His hands were eager to hold you closer and deepen the kiss like you were his lifeline. You only stepped away from him when oxygen seemed to run thin and your chest rose and fell as your lungs tried to gain air.
"I didn't prepare anything," you admitted, a guilty expression on your face.
"You have given me everything I could ask for," he answered and your heart soared with adoration.
"Who knew when I met you," his hand cradled your face and you leaned into his touch. "that you would be the key to finding the last white oak stake."
Any trace of euphoria that lingered, seemed to have been sucked into the pit you felt forming in your stomach and rapidly replaced with dread. You sucked in a breath, a feeble attempt to keep your composure and you ripped away from the arms that you so desperately wanted to hold onto before.
"What are you talking about?" you questioned with a cliched phrase.
"Forgive me for prying, it was not my intention." he apologized as if he had accidentally found your secret diary and not the weapon that could destroy him and his family.
"A nook hidden by a loose floorboard in our own home as a hiding place was a genius hiding place." he commended. "It was only a stroke of luck that I managed to locate it."
Your downfall was approaching. You knew the signs. You had seen them the day your parents gasped their last breaths. It was poetic how your end would come at the same hands as your parents.
You sighed. You passed him on the way to your bed so you could take a sit and he made no attempt to stop you. He knew that you had no chance of escape. "Ask away." You didn't try to excuse yourself. The damning proof spoke for itself and left only but a few details for the story to be completed.
Your hand found the clasp of the necklace you never took off since the day Elijah gave it to you. Your only defense against his compeling charm. You left it on the bed next to you.
"Why?" his question was simply and betrayed no anger, as if being betrayed came to him like second nature. However, you had grown to know him as you had grown to foolishly care for him. No matter he tried to school his expression the hurt in his eyes stood out as youheld his gaze.
"To avenge." You found it hard to answer without your voice wavering, but you felt like you owed him that. "You took something away from me when I was very young and left only memories and nightmares in its place. So I took a decision then. A life for a life. A family for a family."
His lips pursed at the answer but nodded. He understood enough. His mouth opened to let loose words that seemed to be stuck in his throat. He took a step closer to you and kneeled on the floor, his hands eager to meet your thighs as you were finally face to face. The vulnerable look on his face would be one of the sins that would haunt the rest of your life.
"Did you ever in this facade even love me?" You felt entranced from his gaze and his voice rang in such way that you couldn't stop the response even if you wanted to.
"I love you, even when I tried not to." Your words didn't even register in your mind yet your eyes couldn't help but well up.
One of his palms found your face again and you rejoiced at the gentle touch even as you felt your last moments come from the person that you had to hate but loved.
"You are going to forget..." You couldn't take your eyes off of the handsome stranger that held you so tenderly.
