Sunoo's POV
I looked down the stairs, I had to make a choice, but only one choice...only one chance, to save...
I could feel my heart pounding as I carried Sunghoon down the stairs. His weight felt heavier with each step, not because he was getting any heavier, but because the reality of leaving the others behind was sinking in.
Their screams echoed through the stairwell, blending with the sounds of gunshots and growls. Tears blurred my vision, but I kept moving, driven by the thought that if I didn't, both Sunghoon and I would be dead.
We reached the fourth floor and heard the unmistakable sound of zombies below. I ducked into a nearby classroom and shut the door behind us. The room was dark, lit only by the dim, rainy light coming through the windows. I gently laid Sunghoon on the floor, and he groaned, clutching his stomach.
“Wait, I’ll clean it,” I said, my voice shaky. I tore a piece of my shirt, then went to the window to wet it with the rain. The cool water stung my fingers, but it was a relief compared to the chaos we had just escaped. Returning to Sunghoon, I carefully removed the blood-soaked gauze and winced at the sight of the wound. It was deep and dirty, clearly not cleaned properly.
“This is going to hurt,” I warned, though Sunghoon probably knew that. I began to clean the wound with the wet cloth. Sunghoon groaned, biting his palm to keep from screaming. His eyes welled up with tears, but he didn’t make a sound. Seeing him in pain tore at my heart.
“I’m sorry,” I whispered, my own tears falling onto his wound, mixing with the rainwater.
Sunghoon shook his head weakly. “Do what you have to do,” he said, his voice barely more than a whisper. “Thank you.”
I nodded, but the guilt didn’t lessen. I finished cleaning the wound as best as I could and wrapped it with the remaining cloth. We sat in silence, listening to the rain and the distant sounds of chaos.
Sunghoon broke the silence, his voice a mere whisper. "I'm sorry."
I shook my head fiercely, holding his hand tightly. "No, don't say that," I replied, my voice choked with emotion. "I'm the one who's sorry. Sorry for leaving you."
Sunghoon squeezed my hand, his grip surprisingly strong despite his weakened state. "It was my fault, I'm so mad at myself," he continued, his eyes filled with regret. "For letting our group break like that. I should not have been such a bitch."
I felt tears streaming down my face, but I didn't bother to wipe them away. "You were just trying to protect us," I said. "You were scared, like all of us. None of this is your fault."
Sunghoon's eyes softened, and he gave me a faint smile. "You're the type of person to say that to everyone, Sunoo. Even now, you're still trying to see the best in everyone."
"It's not about being kind," I insisted. "It's about surviving. We need each other, Sunghoon. We need to stay together."
He nodded slowly, his expression thoughtful. "Maybe... maybe we can find others. Maybe they're still out there, fighting like we are."
"Maybe," I agreed, though I wasn't sure if I believed it myself. But I knew we had to hold on to hope, no matter how slim. "For now, we need to rest and gather our strength. We'll figure out our next move in the morning."
