Sunoo's POV
I looked down the stairs, I had to make a choice, but only one choice...only one chance, to save...
I couldn't leave Heeseung behind, not when he might be the key to all of this. "Heeseung!" I shouted, but he seemed too lost in the chaos to notice. Without hesitation, I grabbed his hand, pulling him towards the stairs. "The others-" he managed to say, but I cut him off, urgency flooding my veins. "We have no time!"
As we descended the stairs, the sound of the undead echoed around us. We fought through them, hand in hand, adrenaline pumping as we made our way out of the school. The streets were overrun, but we didn't stop. We ran, the horde hot on our heels, until Heeseung pulled me into an alleyway. The zombies struggled to follow because of how narrow the way is, buying us a moment of relief and escape.
Breathing heavily, we hid in an abandoned building nearby. For a brief moment, we caught our breath, the weight of our survival sinking in. We were in this together now, for better or worse.
"Why me...?" Heeseung's voice was heavy with exhaustion and confusion. "You could be the cure," I replied, my breath still ragged from our escape.
Heeseung slumped down, laying flat on the ground. "Even if I am the cure, we can't even find one goddamn soldier roaming around here."
"Well, if they won't come here, we'll come to them," I said, determination flickering in my eyes. After some time to prepare, we ventured out into the dark hollow night. We scoured the streets, searching for a working car amidst the darkness. Encountering zombies along the way, we dispatched them quietly, not wanting to attract more attention.
Finally, we stumbled upon a car. With a bit of urgency, we hotwired it and Heeseung took the driver's seat. Minutes passed in silence as we drove through the grass fields, leaving the town behind us.
The night air blew in the car as I opened the window, it felr so... relieving. It's been so long since I felt so calm and contented, I wanted to let my guard down, just for this night.
"Heeseung, let's sleep first," I suggested as fatigue began to weigh heavily on us both.
Heeseung's eyes continued to stare the road down, "I can still-" he started to protest, but I interrupted him. "You'll need it, especially when the soldiers inspect you."
Reluctantly, Heeseung agreed, parking the car by the side of the road amidst the tall grass. We locked the doors and settled in for some much-needed rest. Heeseung took the driver's seat while I squeezed into the back, and soon, sleep claimed us both.
...
I woke up in the middle of the night, ironically, the silence outside drawing me from my sleep. I glanced at Heeseung, still peacefully asleep in the driver's seat.
Carefully, I opened the door and stepped out, the cool night air hitting me like a wave. It made my hair fly, and I almost teared up from the sheer peacefulness. I missed this feeling so much, the quiet, the calm.
I stood in the middle of the road, taking a deep breath. There were no zombies in sight, just the silence of the night.
Suddenly, I felt a hand grab my shoulder. My heart leaped, and I spun around, ready to defend myself, when Heeseung caught my fist.
"Whoa!" Heeseung exclaimed, his eyes wide. I was shocked and quickly dropped my hand. "S-Sorry... You're awake..."
Heeseung chuckled, wiping the sleep from his eyes. "Well, now I am." We laughed softly, the tension melting away in the quiet night.
