The restaurant was packed with hungry customers when Mac walked in the doors, ready for her second day. Noelle, and another boy Mac hadn't met yet stood at the register, taking orders. Noelle had her hair up in a bun, with a few strands hanging down on either side of her face. She wasn't wearing any makeup—not that she needed to, as she was naturally beautiful. Mac didn't realize she was staring until her blue eyes met Noelle's emeralds, and a smile formed on her lips. Blushing, Mac snapped out of her thoughts and headed to the locker room to change into her uniform.
As she opened the door to the girls' locker room, her eyes fixed on the large scar on the back of the person who was changing. It looked like someone had taken a knife and dragged it diagonally downwards. The person changing was quick to put on her shirt and turned around. It was none other than Madison. Mac's eyes quickly diverted, but she could not forget the sight she had just seen. The younger girl opened her mouth to say something but was cut off.
"Heard of knocking?" the older blonde asked, annoyed, as she sat down on a chair and changed her shoes.
"Um, I-I didn't know there was anyone here," Mac stuttered, heading to her locker to change. She wanted to ask about the scar, but she knew she'd have a better chance of going to the moon than getting an honest answer from her sister. Madison quickly finished and walked out without even looking at her younger sister. Mac sighed as she quickly changed into her uniform.
The afternoon rush had just started and all the employees worked in a high pace. All the shift managers were present, as well as Jackson and others. The scullery room had two young boys trying their best to keep up with the dishes before things started to pile up. In the kitchen, the cooks were sweating due to the high pace and the ovens that were almost 600°F. Madison was on her way to the restaurant, serving four dishes at once. Mac sought out the nearest manager, a young man she had not met yet.
"Hi, I'm Mackenzie Grey. I had my first day yesterday. Where do you want me?" she asked a dark-haired boy, who looked like he was from Mexico, or somewhere in South America. His eyes widened, and it took him a few moments to answer Mac's question.
"Uh, hi. I'm Derek Lopez. You can try waitressing today with Grey, um, the other Grey, and Adler," he said, then went back to what he was doing, occasionally glancing at Mac in the background, thinking that she looked a lot like his friend, Madison. Mac nodded to herself and found Jackson, who was probably more willing to show her around than her sister.
"Grey and Adler, take a break," Noelle ordered after a few hours had passed. It had been busy, and time had flown by. Mac didn't even notice she was hungry until now. She washed off a sauce stain she'd gotten on her arm, which was nothing compared to what Madison had on her leg. It looked like a ketchup stain she hadn't been able to get off.
"Damn I'm hungry," Jackson exclaimed, washing his hands. Mac nodded in agreement, feeling Noelle's eyes staring intensely at her. Her heart rate increased, which the blonde tried to ignore, without success. She hadn't had the chance to talk to her yet, nor had she been able to send a sneak peek to Marley.
"Wanna share a pizza?" Jackson asked, looking at the pre-made pizzas laying in a warming cabinet, waiting to be sold. He had just informed her that they could eat for free, which was a big upgrade from the restaurant she previously worked at.
"As long as it has pineapple," Mac grinned and pointed to the only pizza that had pineapple as one of its toppings. Jackson pursed his lips and made a face that told her he wasn't a fan of pineapple on pizza, but replied that it was fine. They brought the pizza and sat down in the lunchroom.
As Mac sat down, she leaned back and closed her eyes for a few seconds, appreciating the silence. The kitchen was filled with beeping noises, and everyone had to shout to be heard. Jackson and Mac talked about everything and nothing, the conversation flowing naturally. They exchanged numbers and social media. Mac noticed he had several thousand followers on Instagram. Was he famous or something? When she commented on it, Jackson revealed that he was the quarterback at school. Perhaps Mac should have known, considering they went to the same school, but she had never really cared about football.
"Adler, can you clean the restaurant?" Noelle asked as she saw Mac and Jackson return to the register area. He snorted but complied. As soon as he was out in the restaurant, Noelle came up to Mac, causing butterflies to flutter in her stomach. Noelle bent down to her height and whispered in her ear, "come with me to the office". Hearing her voice sent shivers down Mac's spine, while her heart beat a little faster. Mac looked at her with a raised eyebrow. The dark-haired girl winked at her and walked towards the office. Mac shook her head smilingly and followed her boss. The older girl closed the door behind Mac, and it felt like all the oxygen in the room disappeared for both girls.
"Go on a date with me," Noelle said and it felt like her emerald green eyes were looking right through Mac. The same strong perfume from yesterday filled her nose, same with the shampoo from her hair. Mac took a few seconds to collect herself and all she got out was "what?".
"Go on a date with me. Say, tomorrow?" she said, looking at the younger girl from head to toe.
"What happened to staying professional?" Mac challenged, surprised she was able to get the words out without stuttering.
"It got boring," Noelle replied, shrugging her shoulders. She came a little closer, and placed her hand on the door, pressing Mac against it. She was standing just a few inches away, which sent all Mac's senses spinning. They held eye contact for a while before Mac answered.
"You don't often get rejected, do you?" she asked, diverting her eyes from the beauty in front of her. Noelle grinned and slowly shook her head. Mac looked back at her and put her hand on Noelle's cheek. Soft. Her lips parted, and her gaze went from Mac's eyes to her lips.
"One time must be the first," Mac winked at her, and walked out of the office. Maybe Noelle could let Mac focus on work for the last few hours?
Noelle's plan was to keep Mac close to her, to keep her safe, when she asked her out. But Mac actually said no. Left alone in the office, Noelle's jaw almost dropped to the floor. She hadn't expected Mac to seduce her and then reject her. No one had ever done that to her before, and it made her want Mac even more. She shook her head, thinking that if Mac knew who she really was, she would probably run away and never speak to her again.
Jackson had returned from the restaurant and quickly sought out Mac, starting a conversation with her. He said something that made Mac laugh, which made Noelle smile. Despite her tough exterior, Mac made her soft without knowing it.
Noelle's thoughts drifted to considering what horrible task she could give Jackson to keep him away. Or perhaps she should give Mac one? Teach her a little lesson on how things worked. The idea was tempting.
Her train of thought was interrupted by a message on her phone. She pulled it out and read the message from Capo:
Bonnano plans to steal the Hutton-Mdivani jewel before us from the National Museum tonight, but we'll get ahead of them. Meet at the villa ASAP. Don't tell Madison.
