Exodus 12:1-28
Why think about Passover as Christians?
Jesus ate this meal, it gives insight to his life because he celebrated it. He makes it clear it's not just about the exodus, all the symbols point us towards Him as he's our Passover Lamb.Egypt faced God, a punishment for their own sin. But for Israel the punishment was diverted and given to the Passover lamb.
Will you face your own sin like Egypt or hide behind the cross of Jesus so that it falls on him. Christ is our Passover lamb. This meal doesn't bring us back to just the exodus but to Jesus.
1. Beginning
12:1-2 The Israelites are starting a new life as people free to serve the Lord, they are no longer slaves. The final plague marked the beginning of the new life for the nation of Israel.
The death of the lamb in Israel marked the new beginning. The day we believe in the death of the Lord, that is our new beginning to life. We are a new creation. Our life of slavery to sin is gone, it all begins with the Lamb of God.
2. Pure
2:5 They weren't allowed to kill just any animal it had to be unblemished, nothing wrong with it. Why is God being so picky with the kind of animal they need to eat? A sinner cannot help another sinner, what you need is someone who is pure and blameless, someone with no sin of their own. Jesus is the only one who can stand in the place of sinners.
Matthew 16:6 shows us that throughout the Bible, yeast is tainted as being corrupted. Not only was the sacrifice to be pure but the people too, so they had to throw out anything with yeast. Are we holding onto any yeast, corruptions?
3. Complete
2:9 In the Passover meal they eat the whole lot, they couldn't leave bits on the side or break the bones. There is a completeness to this, nothing wasted, nothing broken. When Jesus was hung on the cross none of his bones were broken. As we look at Jesus dying on the cross he didn't just carry part of our sin, he was completely consumed by the wrath of God, just like this lamb. There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.
4. Ceremony
9:17 The meal isn't just for this day but it's to be a permanent celebration, every year from now on. It was meant to be a reminder of everything they've been through and the powerful rescues God did for them.
9:26-27 The kids are going to ask questions so the Jews can tell the children about what God had done. The Lord's supper follows this same track, the bread and the wine take us back to our crucified saviour. Just like the Israelites we have the opportunity to talk about how sin was taken away from us and the unlimited power of Christ.
5. Community
9:43-45 Moses is very clear with who can and can't eat the passover meal. Why so fussy on who's allowed to take part? There's no sitting on the fence when talking about God. Can't have one foot in and one out. The people must be fully committed. The foreigners can join if they want only if they fully commit and become circumcised. Those who take part in the Lords supper need to be as committed to Christ as those in Exodus 12. You can't take part in communion if it's just a phase. It's not for just a foreigner, if you're a stranger to Gods grace you shouldn't be taking the Lords supper. Those who are committed to Christ, that's the type of community Moses is describing. Don't delay anymore if you haven't yet devoted yourself to the Lord Jesus Christ.
6. Coats
:11 In this meal there's a strict dress code. You need to dress as if you're ready to leave. They need to eat as if the moment they eat the last mouthful they are going straight out the door onto their journey. A journey that is going to lead them to the promised land. It doesn't just point them back to Egypt it points them forwards towards the promised land that they can call home under the peace of God. We don't just look back when we have the Lords supper, we look forward to Glory. This isn't our home, we are foreigners living in this world. Our home is with God in glory. When we take the Lords supper we need to know we are on our journey forward to glory. Each time the Israelites ate this meal they were camping somewhere new, pitching their tents closer to Canaan. Each time we take the lords supper we remember the Passover lamb and we are getting a little bit closer to glory. Let's remember we're on this journey. Jesus was the perfect sacrifice, completely consumed so we could be completely forgiven.
