!TW - Anxiety, PTSD, Alcoholism!
Charlie's POV -
Frightened, I look up and meet Nick's gaze - which is a mixture of sadness and relief. His eyes are watery and glossy.
"I can't be... I can't be mad because of that" he answers quietly. He sits quiet for a moment and looks at me, examining me from head to toe, before he gives me a big, warm hug. I let all my emotions come out - again. His heartbeat against my ear is like a soothing melody and I feel how a huge weight is lifted off my shoulders. After a moment of silence and rest, Nick stands up from the bed. He walks over to a shelf to get something, but my eyes are fixed on something else. On the shelf there is a statue, looking like a whiskey bottle - and the world around me immediately begins to slowly blur. The bottle is there as a reminder of what I have just escaped from. But suddenly the bottle is no longer a statue, it becomes real. And I'm no longer in Nick's room. I'm home again, in my living room. I see my mother sitting on the sofa with the bottle in her hand, her eyes are tired and cold. She yells at me, profanity and accusations fill the room. Unexpectedly, she angrily throws the bottle at the wall and it shatters with a loud noise, shards of glass flying everywhere. The smell of alcohol spreads quickly around me. I feel the fear and helplessness wash over me like a cold wave, and I feel my whole body begin to shake again.
"Charlie?" I hear Nick say. The voice breaks through my memories, but I can't answer. I can't see him. It's like I'm not in control of my own body - can't run or talk. I'm still staring at the bottle on the shelf, which to me is in a thousand pieces on the living room floor.
"Whatever you see right now, its not real" Nick says again, calmly and mildly. I try to focus on his words, but the images and memories keep flowing past my eyes. Mother's anger, her outburst. All I want to do is run and hide, but I can't - my head and body aren't talking to each other anymore.I suddenly feel someone sit down next to me in bed and soon I understand that it is Nick. He gently grabs my hand and it's nice to know I'm not alone.
"Charlie, can you look at me?" He says and I feel him gently trying to turn my head towards him. I force myself to meet his gaze, and I quickly see a pair of brown eyes filled with compassion and strength.
"You're here, with me" he continues while looking deeply into my eyes. I try to take deep breaths and with each passing second I feel reality slowly begin to return. Nick's face is getting clearer and clearer for me to see.
"Can you tell me what you see?" Nick asks, his eyes still glued to mine.
"Y..You" I whisper with a trembling voice. I see how Nick smiles with relief and he quickly places a kiss on my cheek. He asks if I want to talk about what just happened, but I answer quickly by firmly shaking my head - I never want to relive what just happened.————
