Y/n walk down the path, her feet barely audible as they touch the ground below. The scenery is beautiful, but her mind is on the hobbit that she was to find, escort, and protect. Y/n looked up to see the sun starting to set when she heard the sound of rustling leaves coming in her direction. Suddenly, four hobbits tumble onto the road. Y/n is quick to catch one before he falls into horse droppings.
"That was close." the hobbit said.
The hobbit looks up at Y/n as she steadies him on his feet. He then turns to the others as they bicker, but one hobbit looks at the elleth before looking down the road as does Y/n. Darkness was coming closer and the hobbits were unaware of the danger.
"I think we should get off the road." the hobbit with dark hair says. There is a long wail and Y/n quickly grabs the hobbit along with another hobbit and pushes them off the road.
"Quickly, hide!" Y/n whisper hisses before jumping into a tree above them. The Hobbits quickly scramble down the bank, hiding under a mossy log below where Y/n hid. The sound of hoof-beats came closer and Y/n could see the dark rider coming closer. The dark rider stops below the elleth as she stays silent as she watches him, he gets off his horse and gets closer to the hobbits.
Y/n pulls out her bow and arrow quietly, just in case she needs to use it. Everything is quiet, too quiet until a bag was thrown away from the hobbits. The ring-wraith spins around at the sound, and darts to the far side of the road with frightening speed. Y/n jumps down and looks at the hobbits.
"We must hurry." She says.
They quickly run from the tree and further into the forest.
"What was that?" one of the hobbits asked.
"Quickly, we must hurry on our way if we want a chance to escape them." Y/n says, ignoring the hobbit's question.
"Who are you?" the dark haired hobbit asked.
"I'm a friend of Gandalf the Grey. He sent me to help you on your journey, now if you will please, we must hurry." Y/n says as she helps the hobbit to his feet.
Y/n follows the hobbits, all her senses on high alert for any signs of oncoming danger.
"Anything?"
"No."
"What is going on?"
"The black rider is after something or someone... Frodo?"
Y/n looks at them before pushing them to the ground and putting a finger to her lips to be quiet. She looks ahead and sees the black rider a distance off before it turns and runs off. She turns to see the hobbits looking scared. Suddenly, the dark haired hobbit speaks as he stands up.
"I have to leave the Shire... Sam and I must get to Bree." the hobbit says before looking at the female elf. "I'm guessing you are here to see to my safety?"
She gives him a curt nod before looking out into the distance with a frown.
"Right... Buckleberry Ferry... follow me !" one of the hobbits says.
Y/n sees the black rider and quickly usher the hobbits to move. "Hurry now! Quickly!"
The urgency in her voice gets them to move before they see the black rider coming towards them.
"Quickly, this way!"
Y/n follows the hobbits as they run through the forest with the black rider behind them. They were running towards a wide, placid river and a boat. Y/n keeps looking back and curses as she sees the black rider coming closer.
"Get the ropes, Sam."
Y/n turns to see four black riders coming towards them. She picks up the hobbit with dark hair and continues running towards the boat.
"Frodo!"
"Set off! Set off!" Y/n yells.
They listen as they push the boat away from the dock. Y/n grips onto the hobbit in her arms before jumping off the dock and into the boat, the hobbit clinging to her as she makes the jump. The black riders make an ear piercing shriek and Y/n quickly hold onto the hobbit in her arms, covering his ears from the noise as the others cover their ears. She turns to see the black riders ride off and she doesn't look away until she can't see them. Y/n then turns to the hobbits around her and in her arms.
"Is everyone alright?" She asked quickly before looking at the dark haired hobbit. They nod.
"Thank you." the hobbit with dark hair says before getting out of Y/n's arms. She gives him a slight smile before fixing her hood.
"How far to the nearest crossing?" the dark haired hobbit asked.
"The Brandywine Bridge... twenty miles."
As they made their way, it started to rain and they put up their cloak hoods.
"Excuse me miss, but pardon my rudeness, but how can we trust you if we don't know your name?" the rather larger hobbit asked.
"Sam." the dark haired hobbit slightly scolded.
Y/n put up her hand, "no, he's fine. I'm sure if I were him I would be skeptical of everyone around him. I'm Y/n, I'm a half-elf ranger."
"I'm Meriadoc Brandybuck but I go by Merry." Merry said.
"I'm Peregrin Took, but everyone calls me Pippin." Pippin said.
Y/n's 5'4" stature towering over the hobbits even as they sit. Y/n could guess the last hobbit's name because of how often the others had said it.
"So, Frodo, first time away from home?" Y/n asks, trying to make light conversation.
Frodo looks up at the elleth and nods. "It's everyone's first time away from the Shire. Have you been?"
"No... but I wish to gaze upon the green land of the Shire someday." Y/n says as she scans the banks of the river.
They eventually dock the boat and quickly make their way to Bree. A few times Y/n had to catch the hobbits as they stumbled. Y/n runs along with them, but her senses are ever watchful. They ran all the way to the gates. Frodo knocks on the gates and a surly gatekeeper opens the door and looks down at the hobbits before giving Y/n a skeptical look.
"What do you want?" he asks harshly. Y/n's hands went to the hobbit's shoulders in front of her, which was Frodo's. He looks up at the elleth, but her eyes never waver from the gatekeeper.
"We're headed for the Prancing Pony." Frodo said, looking away from Y/n and back to the gatekeeper. The gatekeeper swings his lantern onto them, bathing them in an uncomfortable yellow spotlight. Y/n's hands slightly strengthens on the shoulders of the hobbit, pulling him out of the light as she steps forward a bit.
"Hobbits! Four Hobbits and a female elf?! What business brings you to Bree?" the man inquires.
"We wish to stay at the inn..." Frodo says. "Our business is our own."
The gatekeeper looks at Y/n as he opens the gates for them. Her hands leave Frodo's shoulders and she ushers him and the others through the gates.
"Stay close." Y/n whispers to the hobbits as they walk through the streets.
"Watch where you're going elf!" a man spits as he runs into Y/n's shoulder. Y/n ignores the man, used to their unwelcoming gazes and their harsh words. The hobbits look at the elf but she ushers them forward.
"Pay them no mind, make haste for the inn." Y/n says as her hand finds the back of Frodo, ushering him forward. "Come now, we should be getting close."
They see the sign for the Prancing Pony Inn. Y/n opens the door for the hobbits. They hurry in and out of the rain. They take down their hoods and shake off their cloaks. Y/n stands behind the hobbits as they walk to the bar. She scans the inn, her eyes landing on a man clad in a cloak, a smoke pipe in his mouth, his eyes gleaming from the glow of the pipe. His eyes find hers but her gaze from him is broken when she feels someone tug on her cloak. Looking down Y/n see Pippin and Merry tugging on her cloak.
"Are you staying with us?" Merry asks.
"I shall stay until Gandalf returns." Y/n says as she follows the two hobbits to a table. She orders herself some tea and some food.
"I will pay whatever the hobbits fees are." Y/n says to the innkeeper, smiling down at the hobbits around her.
"We should not let you pay for our food and drinks Y/n." Frodo says.
"It is but no worry of mine, Frodo." Y/n says with a smile.
Merry suddenly sits down with a rather large cup of beer for his small stature. Y/n couldn't help but chuckle at the excitement on his face.
"What's that?" Pippin asks.
"This, my friend, is a pint." Merry says proudly.
"It comes in pints? I'm getting one!" Pippin says before leaving, making Y/n chuckle at his excitement, his feeting rather unsteady.
"You've had a whole half already." Sam says as they watch Pippin leave.
Feeling the stare of the cloaked man bares into Y/n's back, she slowly turns her head slightly, looking at the man in a cloak.
"Excuse me, that man in the corner, who is he?" Frodo asks the innkeeper.
"He's one of them Rangers; they're dangerous folk they are, wandering the wilds. What his right name is, I never heard, but 'round here he's known as Strider." the innkeeper says.
Y/n has heard of the name, all rouges and rangers heard of his name. But also hearing the innkeeper say that rangers were bad folk, Y/n felt Sam's and Frodo's eyes on her for a little time. She sits in silence, her hands folded in front of her, and her mind lost in thought.
"Miss Y/n?"
Y/n looks up to see Merry looking at her with a confused look. She gives him a smile until she looks over to see Pippin and Frodo. The elleth stands quickly, but not quickly enough. Frodo falls and disappears, she quickly goes to where he was, Pippin also looking at where Frodo disappeared. Y/n sees Strider grab Frodo from under a table and she gathers the other hobbits, making haste up the stairs. Y/n stands at a distance as the hobbits burst into the room with Sam squaring off with his fists, Merry a candlestick, and Pippin a chair. The female elf comes up behind them, her hand on her sword.
"Let him go or I'll have you, Longshanks!" Sam yells.
Strider looks at Y/n and she looks back at him before looking down at the hobbits with an amused glint in her eyes.
"You have a stout heart, little Hobbit, but that alone won't save you... You can no longer wait for the Wizard, Frodo." He then looks at Y/n as her hands rest on Merry's and Pippin's shoulders. "They're coming."
"Then we shall be prepared for their coming." Y/n say as her hands leave the hobbits' shoulders.
Y/n's eyes were focused on Strider until she suddenly looked down at the hobbits, her e/c eyes looking into theirs. She walks up to Strider, whispers passed between them.
"We must hurry." Strider says, walking past Y/n, ushering the hobbits to their room to sleep.Y/n stood by the window along with Strider, looking out. Frodo looks to Y/n, her face shrouded in darkness, making her mysterious, yet her elven beauty stood out.
"Frodo, can you not sleep?" Y/n suddenly asks, turning to him. Frodo looks into her eyes, her eyes warm as her e/c pools gazed upon him. "Sleep, we will keep you safe."
Right before he laid down, the black riders shrieked, waking all the hobbits. Y/n's hand was quick to her sword as she turned to the window. She watches as the black riders rode away.
"What are they?" Frodo asked, walking up to Y/n, who placed her hand on his shoulder, his 3'4" stature nothing on her 5'4" stature.
"They were once men." she says with a quiet voice.
"Great Kings of men. Then Sauron the deceiver gave to them Nine Rings of Power. Blinded by their greed they took them without question, one by one falling into darkness and now they are slaves to his will." Strider says as the hobbits gather at the window, close to the Elleth that has shown them warmth since they met the day before. "They are the Nazgul, Ringwraiths, neither living or dead. At all times they feel the presence of the ring... drawn to the power of the one... they will never stop hunting you."
Y/n's hand gripped tighter to Frodo's shoulder before kneeling down. "Do not fret, for we will protect you with our lives."
Frodo looked at Y/n, her e/c eyes looking into his, causing his heart to skip a beat. She then looked to the others, her eyes meeting each of theirs. "Go, sleep now. We travel tomorrow."
She led the hobbits to the bed, her hand hovering over the hobbits as they got into the bed. Merry and Pippin laid side by side as Sam and Frodo squeeze into the bed. She stands up and walks to Strider.
"Where do you plan to take the hobbits?" she asks in Sindarian. Strider looked at her, his gaze unwavering.
"To the place I was raised." he said, before standing and leaving the room, but stopping to look at the sleeping hobbits. "I shall return, watch over the hobbits."
Y/n sits near the window, silent as she watches the hobbits sleep. Frodo wakes up to see Y/n sitting near the window. He quietly leaves the bed and walks up to the elf who watches the roads silently.
"Trouble sleeping?" she asks softly. The hobbit stands beside her as he also looks out the window.
"It's strange, never have I had trouble sleeping until this ring was given to me," he says.
"Frodo, do not fret over things you can not change. You are not alone mellonin." she says quietly, her hand resting on his shoulder. "Did I not promise to protect you, Frodo?"
Frodo looks at the half-elf rogue, her brown hair and her e/c eyes shining in what little light the candle in the room had. She held out her hand to the hobbit who slowly took it. She led him back to the bed.
"Rest young hobbit, tomorrow is a new day. You need rest."
"And what of Strider?" Frodo asked.
"He is getting supplies for our journey tomorrow." Y/n says before walking back to the window.
