Rathamin and Speron took a third fly by through the forest in a vain attempt to find their friends, coming up empty took a visible toll on them both. Rathamin's determination was second only to Speron. she looked thru the tree line like a bird of prey. Probably not far from the truth Rathamin thought to himself.
Rathamin caught a gust and turned into Speron's flight path, flying close, He looked at her and paused for a second, "We should keep moving towards the mountains like we talked about"
With a sigh, Speron asked, "Do you think they are ok?"
Rathamin took a deep breath, "Speron they could be ahead of us, trying to figure out how to find us" he trailed off.
"But they could be far behind us", Speron said, not really trying to hide the anger in her voice. "They could be in trouble, or worse", she said through a sob, "They might be..."
"No! Rathamin stopped her, "Were not thinking that way, we're not thinking that kind of thought", he looked in her eyes with a determination he didn't really feel but he'd be the strong one for her. "Their both strong and fighters, they can take care of themselves. We've always known this could happen. We all have to finish our own trials."
"Your right, she sniffed and straightened upright.
'Yes. he tried to smile, besides, their probably in a café somewhere, drinking my coffee.
Speron smiled a bit and grunted, "Then we have ground to make up, she said and flew towards the high mountain range.
As the two flew over trees and then past some farms, they flew Speron looked at Rathamin, hey Rathamin", she said, "I've been afraid to ask, but do you think were going to make it out of here"?
Rathamin sailed on another wind gust and climbed higher as he examined the mountains in the distance, "Speron, you have my word, to my last breath I'll do all I can to make sure we do, are you ok with that answer?
Speron thought about the answer and finally said, "I know you will, we all will do whatever we have to do to make it out of here alive, so yes I guess I'm ok with that answer" she said with a sigh.
Rathamin found it harder to maintain his glide path as he was buffeted around from the wind in the higher altitudes. Currents of wind hit him one side, then the other. As he looked at Speron, he saw that she wasn't having the same issues. Likely her experience in flying had prepared her better.
Speron seemed to recognize his dilemma. She smiled slightly as he looked at her. "Lean into the gust as it comes across the base of your wings" she said. She showed him as she leaned into the wind with ease and grace. With a flap she would climb, followed by a graceful glide.
Rathamin followed Speron's direction and felt his wings take on the gust, he realized he didn't have her grace but he realized what she meant as his wings seemed to engulf the wind as well as propel him higher.
As the two climbed higher they watched the mountain terrain grow larger as they flew closer. Without warning, a downward draft knocked the two flyers in a downward gust, The two corkscrewed toward the mountain face and Rathamin hit the rock with a slam knocking the wind out of him as he tasted rock, and blood. Ignoring the pain and the whining in his head his powerful claw grabbed a handful of rock and dirt digging in. He managed to turn enough and grab Speron and reduce her slam into the side of the rockface.
Speron screamed and hit the sheer mountain face and began to slip off, unable to get any footing or grip on the sheer face. Rathamin grabbed her by her shoulder and pulled her up. Speron gasped and looked wildly around her. Another heavy gust hit the pair and pinned them against the mountain.
