It been weeks since you've heard from Rodrick. Yeah you see him around school and in final period together but he and you are just like strangers now. Good. It'll be easier to forget him when you're out of plainview if all goes well that is, another move will commence and off to the next town city or maybe even state. Even though it's been weeks you still find it hard to move past finding that certain things remind you of him from time to time from random knickknacks in your room to the songs you listen to. You lay in bed reading, something you've picked up more on in the past weeks, when a knock on the door interrupts you; "come in" you say almost automatically to the sound. Your mom comes in with an elated look on her face holing a bright yellow flyer in her hand "hey sweetheart hope I'm not interrupting you I just wanted to show you this" she sits on the bed excitedly and holds out the flyer for you to see 'Plainview High Talent Show and Fundraiser. Come see amazing acts from your very own talented Plainview students with a $1,000 cash prize to the winner!!'. You glance at the flyer and glance up at her "What about it"? You ask really not interested in it any further "We're gonna go, you me and your father, you know support the community a bit" her wide smile doesn't flinch one bit "That's really nice mom but I don't think I have much support for them at all right now" you roll over away from her and dig back into your book "Oh come on, it'll be fun, show a little spirit. It might clear up some hard feelings amongst your peers for your little incident." You glance at her with disdain for the last part "Come on, let it be like your last hoorah here before we make arrangements for the move." This sways you "Fine, but my stuffs goin on the first u haul here" She rolls her eyes at you and smiles "you got a deal honey" she pets your head before leaving you back to your lonesome self with the loud neon yellow flyer, "talent show huh? Too bad there's not much to see in this crappy town" you say to yourself balling up the flyer and tossing it in the trash can by the door; proceeding back to your book when a thought hits your brain you rush out of bed and downstairs "moooom!?" You stumble into the kitchen "Yeah honey what's up?" She looks at you confused from your sudden outburst "you know have to pay for like a donation to see the talent show right?" You slyly ask her trying to get her to lose interest "oh yeah I know I already sent money in to the school for our seats, I'm really excited especially for Susan's son, Rodrick is it? and his little band they're gonna be so great, don't you think?" You crack a big fake smile "oh yeah just perfect" you say through gritted teeth and slump back up stairs. 'Oh great just when you've avoided him and everything about him for this long and now you're going to 'support' them. Stupid talent show, stupid town, stupid feelings, stupid Rodrick....' You feel small tears of frustration pricking in your eyes 'no you can't cry not anymore not for him' you find it in yourself to calm down for the moment at least. As the week goes on the awkward glances you and Rodrick share in the hallways and in class make that calm feeling seem more tense than anything, along with the loud band practice you can hear over your own music while doing homework after school you dread the talent show this weekend. Having the whole school whisper and gossip about you and him and what you did to Heather showing up to something like that really doesn't feel right even though it has died down in recent weeks. Hopefully after this you can just distance yourself as much as possible from everything until you're finally out of plain view and off to the next junky town or city.
Time skipIt's the end of the week now and with much anticipation in the community and in your own home the talent show fundraiser thing is finally here. You get ready half assed throwing on a your favorite jeans and blouse(or t shirt) accessorizing so you don't look so out of it. Giving yourself a once over in the mirror, it's not how you want to look but it's what they're gonna get. You trot down the stairs meeting your parents getting final touch ready your mom helping your dad tie his tie. "Oh Y/N you look great, are you ready?" "As ready as I'll ever be" you mutter under your breathe as you leave the house getting into the car and heading on your way to that hell hole every one calls school. The building has never looked so alive, it seems like almost everyone in town is here to watch and donate to mediocre acts. You enter the auditorium of the school feeling better now that all eyes aren't on you like they had been a couple weeks ago, your parents greeting almost everyone as the social butterfly's they are. You find your way to some seats and wait until the actual "show" starts. A couple of acts go by including Rowleys magic act with Greg as his assistant which you really like, but now you're in need of a bathroom break. You excuse yourself from your parents and sneak out of the auditorium. 'Ugh finally fresh air and some piece and quiet I couldn't wait a sec-' some one bumps into you breaking you from your thoughts and your phone. You look up and your eyes are immediately met with his, Rodrick. "Ugh" you sigh loudly and try to walk past him when he grabs your arm "Y/N wait please I need to talk to you" you struggle a bit in his grasp but ease up 'I might as well let him have his last word in before I go' "fine Rodrick what is it" "Y/N I'm really really sorry for what I did, I know I fucked up, bad, it would've never been my intention to hurt you like that, I was an asshole and I still am for doing that so I just really truly wanted to apologize" his voice is laced with sincerity and his face hangs low. You stare back at him blankly and sigh "I really appreciate your apology Rodrick but in a couple weeks from now it won't even matter I'll be out of here and this will all be another distant memory for the books" his expression turns from confusion to realization "you're leaving?" a slight sadness and shock to his voice, you nod to confirm, "oh..." he trails off you stand in an uncomfortable silence for a moment "well um here then," he hands you an old shoe box that you didn't notice him holding "what's th-" "sorry I gotta go we're about to go on" he rushes off into the hallway back into the auditorium leaving you there in complete confusion. You look down at the worn shoe box now sitting in your hands a nervous feeling washing over you as you slowly reach over the flap opening it. You peel back the tissue paper and your heart drops. Tears immediately well up in your eyes. Under the tissue paper lay a pink stuffed monkey just like the one you had told him about that you lost so many years ago. You pick it up from the box with shaky hands bringing it close to your chest and begin to sob. Years of emotional heartache and damage come out like waves. You waver for a moment coming back to reality with puffy eyes you see something else in the box. Picking it up realizing it looks familiar, it's the note he left in your locker that you threw away. You open it some of the food and mystery staining making it a little hard to read but it's just a bunch of words. Like...LYRICS! You gaze into the emptiness of the hallway and rush to the auditorium opening the doors to them already on stage finishing out exploded diaper, one of Rodrick's favorites. Your heart sinks deeper into your chest as the crowd gives a half decent applause. 'I'm such a dick I better just go' you head for the doors when "hey everybody before we leave tonight" you stop dead in your tracks and look towards the stage "we've actually got one more song I know it might get us disqualified but really I don't care" Rodrick is now at a full standing mic with Ben taking his place at his drums. Your watery eyes meet his "I wrote this for someone special, I really didn't mean to take you for granted" they start the song (I'm not makin a whole ass song for this part so just fill in whatever you want but the meaning is there) his voice wavering a bit from tender emotion never taking his eyes off of yours. You watch in awe, tears streaming down your face his voice hitting parts of your heart that had been broken before many times but seem to be mending. He ends the song and the crowd is silent some claps break through the silence but overall crickets. He sighs and leaves the stage with the rest of them following. You break from your spot and run straight for the behind the stage curtains as the announcer comes out "ALL RIGHT EVERYONE LETS HERE IT ONE MORE TIME FOR LOADED DIAPER!! NOW OUR NEXT ACT IS-" the sound fades away in your head as you search backstage for him. People rushing back and fourth getting there acts together your eyes frantically scan the area as you accidentally bump into people and props, then, you see him. You swear you've never been happier to see him, you run full speed at him, "RODRICK!!" you yell catching his attention from talking to Ben, he only has enough time to react when you slam into him throwing your arms his neck and crashing your lips into his. He's taken aback by this stumbling a little, but he melts right into you wrapping his arms around you and kissing you deeper. You don't care about who's looking all you care about is him. Both of you pull away from the kiss still holding each other, his slightly watery eyes staring into yours "I'm so sorry Y/N for everything I-" you cut him off with another small kiss "I forgive you Rodrick, and please no more apologies from here I don't I think I can take another one" you laugh weakly looking down at the stuffed monkey in your hands he lifts your chin and gives you weak smile before pulling you in for a big deep hug, one you didn't even know you needed but feels extremely good. The rest of the show goes on you and Rodrick watching from the very back of the auditorium talking and laughing about it all till it ends. Your parents meet you in the hallway when everyone is excused "There you are we were wondering where you ran off too" your dad scoffs and tussles your hair "what's you think about the show?" you glance over at Rodrick now with his family all congratulating him and praising him, you smile "you know I think I wanna stay here after all". They look at each other in shock and back at you "Are you sure sweetheart I know how adamant you were about getting out of here first thing" your mom cocks an eyebrow at you "yeah I think I just needed to see the good in it, happy to say I think I found it" you smile at them clenching onto the pink stuffed monkey and note from Rodrick, they return the gesture.
