I know I said a week, but I couldn't update in time. I needed to do some research for this chapter. I have some important news so read the author's not at the end!!
Photo on the side from Lily Collin's instagram, since I'm on my phone and can't upload a gif! Think of the shadows as their souls.
Chapter Twenty-Four - Aaron
"She's in theatre, right now," the nurse spoke, "we'll let you know if we know anything else."
"Okay, thank you," Aaron replied, leaving the nurse to join the others.
"What did they say?" Cat asked as soon as she felt his presence beside her.
How was he supposed to tell her that there was a huge possibility of her mother dying? How could he when it was his fault that it happened in the first place?
As he repeated what the nurse had told him, he held his head in his hands. The guilt inside him had already swallowed him whole, leaving only his brain intact to hold the memory. He had been worked up in his exams and keeping Cat secure that he hadn't realised that Kyle would have used other ways to carry out his threats.
"Did they say what happened?" Henry asked, with a distorted voice. Aaron shook his head in reply - if Henry was in this much pain not knowing, how much pain would he be in when he found out the truth?
Around him, the hospital relatives room was in a blur. There were a few doctors coming in and out and Aaron knew that at any moment, there was a huge possibility that one of them could be looking for them.
All of a sudden, Cat burst out into quiet tears, attempting to lean onto the blonde-haired boy beside her but was stopped by his confided position. It woke him up, though, as he opened his hands to see her own face covered by her hands. Just the sight of it kept him under his emotional state - he was frightened of a different reaction, yet he hadn't realised the danger of this one. Watching her face swell with tears, her body shudder and shake from yet another accident.
Even though it made his chest ache, Aaron couldn't move an inch. That left Mickey to go and pick up the pieces.
"We can't lose her, w-we can't..."Aaron shouldn't have thought anything of it, but he had to envy Mickey for interfering.
"You won't lose her," Mickey replied, holding her against him. Since when were they close?
"Let's talk about something else," Rachel suggested, trying to lift the dreadful mood from everyone in the room.
That led everyone to talk about how their exams went. They needed to talk about anything but Mrs Evans.
Aaron couldn't even try. As everyone spoke for a good half an hour, his eyes were focused on the surroundings of the room. A doctor had come in, with the foreboding look that could change the mood on anyone's faces. He looked around for a minute, as though searching out the family it was his job to ruin but stopped at them.
At that moment, everything slowed down - the movements, the voices, even his breathing. His heart beat was loud enough to be heard from afar and it didn't help that it got louder with every footstep the doctor took towards them.
It was difficult to know why he was so stressed in hearing what the doctor had to say: was it because Lillian had been a good person to him, the guilt in being associated with her hospitalisation or was it just the idea that he could be a murderer?
No, I am not a murderer. Lillian will be okay. She's a strong woman, she will make it through.
With his body rocking backwards and forwards, he wanted to believe his words - he really did. It just happened to be the case that he fell for the worst case scenario.
