Chapter Fourteen - Aaron

He didn't know what was worse: Cat agreeing to dance with Mickey or actually watching her dance with him. It was difficult to resist the urge to pull Mickey away from Aaron's mystery girl but somehow, he was managing. Instead, his eyes lingered on them, glaring as she allowed the curly haired boy to place his arms around her waist - his touch all over her innocent body.

That should be me.

Again, he stared at Cat but this time, he chose to admire her. She was dressed in a red Santa's dress up to her knees, with long sleeves ending with fur. Her tights stood out - black like liquorice - as they covered the rest of her legs. Aaron admired the fact that she liked to cover her body, since it meant that she didn't need to flash any skin to get a guy falling for her. The curls remained restless under her hat, falling past her shoulders like snowflakes. Her dip dye had faded slightly, bringing her hair back to her natural colour and Aaron liked it. The chocolate brown suited her pale face, the same way that her voice suited a melody.

"Birds, eh?" Blinking in confusion, Aaron turned to see Henry with the ends of his lips tugging into a smile.

"What are you talking about?" Aaron asked. Henry seemed to be quite random and Aaron made a note to ask about the medication.

Chuckling, Henry glanced towards the dance floor, where Cat and Mickey were. He was talking to her, making her laugh, and it stung Aaron's heart.

"What about them?" His voice was tense, as though being forced through his lips. Henry just had to make him feel even worse - ever since Aaron accidentally suggested taking Cat to a vegetarian restaurant, Henry had been on his case about the entire situation. The constant questions, suspicious looks and unavoidable moments almost made Aaron want to back away from pursuing Cat, like they were meant to, yet he didn't. He liked Cat too much to be scared away.

Henry sighed, "it's funny how a bird can start off completely meaningless but somehow, it all changes."

What is he talking about?

None of it made sense. How was a bird supposed to refer to Cat and Mickey? Aaron gave the younger boy a weird look, about to ask if Henry's medication had changed when Henry added on, "I'm talking about Cat, you idiot!"

"Oh..." He didn't really understand what Henry had meant but he hoped for a further explanation.

Suddenly, Aaron felt a smack on his head.

"She's your little bird! Like your song!" Henry yelled.

With a nervous chuckle, Aaron tried to keep his eyes away from her. He was certain his cheeks were rising in temperature as he dismissed Henry's assumption, instead focusing on the isolated Christmas tree. Like all, it was decorated with fancy baubles and ornaments, with its bright colours flashing away as the lights hit them. A silver star rested on the tip of the tree, looking down on everyone as they danced and enjoyed the party.

"I know you like her, Aaron," Henry teased, nudging Aaron's shoulder in the process. Aaron tried to ignore him, not wanting to be murdered by his best friend, just for having a massive crush on Cat.

The music slowed down a little, making Aaron immediately snap his head back towards the dance floor. He swore that he heard glass shattering as he watched Mickey twirl her around. It should have been him, not Mickey.

He didn't even realise his fists were clenched until Henry pulled them.

"You didn't even hear a word I said, did you?" He asked, trying to grab Aaron's attention and once again, Henry was met with a nervous chuckle. "Seriously, you're whipped. My little sister as well."
