Welcome to Naig.
Naig was a village far east of the Barbaric Archipelago, where the weather blessed them with no snow, hail, or cold. Here, there are only two seasons: rainy and dry.
During the rainy season, the village was filled with intense rains that billowed as they cascaded from thick clouds above. Stormy weather forces forests of extensive greens and other exotic vibrancies to stay plentiful and fruitful for the people. During the dry season, the sun's glaring rays burned brighter than a million stars, and little eddies of wind hurled about the land, carrying its inhabiting creatures faster through the sky.
That day should have been one, just like any other—a day between the two seasons and their contrasting natures filled with life and music.
Music.
Music held great significance to the Naigans and their accompanying residents. The residents in question were an extraordinary breed of dragon. They had many sharp curves, and a beautiful display of ochres and cobalt adorned their large wings. The Naigans named these dragons Deathsongs.
Why?
It was because these peculiar flying creatures had a withering power associated with the lullabies they'd sing.
They'd sing, screeching out an array of alluring cadences. As the dry winds carried their musical notes across the Archipelago, the other dragons who frequently pestered the Naigans for their livestock would freeze in their places. Their arias were so powerful they entranced these dragons to fly by the island's cliffsides.
The only problem here, though not for the Deathsongs, was that these ensnaring melodies always led the dragons to one thing: Death.
Many Vikings around the archipelago travelled to Naig to trade for their delectable fruits. Yet, they always wondered why the Naigans allowed Deathsongs to continue thriving on their islands and why these dragons never attempted to slay them all in a ruthless bloodbath. The answer was simple.
They had bonded.
The Naigans cared greatly for music. They spent their days singing and using the natural world and its beautiful components to fashion their instruments, choirs and orchestras. They'd sing and, after each meal, each kill, and during funerals and weddings. Their singing was how they'd been able to 'tame' the Deathsongs, but their singing wasn't always like the vocals Vikings tended to hear.
Like the Deathsongs, whose singing reached points of eerie screeches to lure in their prey, the Naigans developed a unique vocal technique to call their livestock from far around the green pastures called kulning.
With a life so beautiful, so full of life and music, it stands to question why that day had changed so much.
To this day, it's hard to understand what really happened.

Hello everyone!! This is an incredibly short chapter, 433 words long, to be precise, but the longer chapters will arrive soon! If anyone is wondering, I write Naig based on what my parents have told me about Nigeria, where I'm from. That also inspired the name of the village and the people :)Nigeria --> Naig
Nigerians --> NaigansI'll be pleased to see you all in the next chapter of The Dragon's Song, where you will get to meet Elspeth properly!
