Probably because every Overlord was terrible.
It was quite a surprise when Valentino actually did what he was told, getting in the room and sitting down at the poker table.
I did the same immediately. I really wasn't in the mood to get in trouble with Val today; it had already been a hard week without it.
I wasn't even seated properly when someone already entered the room. I looked up to notice an old cat with huge black and red wings, with black stripes that were decorated with red and white dots.
He was wearing a black suit with an orange bow tie. In his left hand, he held a cane that had a white dice on the top. There was one thing that interested me the most, though-he had small hearts everywhere in his soft-looking fur.
Valentino also had hearts everywhere, but the ones on that feline were different. They looked soft, lovely even. They weren't supposed to deceive you into trusting a predator; they were made to be admired.
He held out one of his paws. Even his claws looked soft. Val took it, shaking it. "Valentino, I hope you did not have to wait too long," he said with unnecessary understanding.
His voice was deeper than the ocean; it left the fur on the back of my neck standing. "Not at all," Valentino lied in a charming tone, which was obviously fake.
Maybe not obvious enough, because the cat's face did not change in the slightest. Instead, his paw just moved silently over to me so I could shake it as well.
For a brief moment, my breath hitched. Normally, I was ignored. Touches, yes, but never out of simple politeness. I was always seen as Valentino's arm candy, never as another sinner next to him.
Once a toy, always a toy. That's how it was, but this overlord wanted me to shake his black and white paw with a golden heart on the palm. "I have a complaint though." Right when I wanted to take the soft-looking paw, it twitched away.
A soft chuckle left the cat due to Val's statement. "A complaint?" he asked, his face still not changing. The feline sat down. I stopped myself from sighing. Again, I wasn't important enough; that's just how overlords were. The moth demon grinned widely. "Yeah, Husk." He crossed his long legs. "I don't like the way one of your owned souls talked to me."
Oh, how I hated that look on Val's face, that stupid, smug grin. He wanted to get that poor sinner in trouble just because he had the power to.
The cat-no, Husk-laughed. A deep, dangerous laugh. I guess he was a 'predator' after all.
He leaned back in his chair. "She told me," he said and lit a cigar, "but I have to disappoint you. I don't own her soul, nor has she made any mistake."
Valentino's smile dropped. "Excuse me?" "Those are my rules she is following," Husk explained.
The tall moth scoffed. "Do you let her talk to you like that? You're a fucking overlord after all!" Val became angry, his voice now echoing through the room.
"Yeah. She is a clever girl, and if she becomes impolite, she obviously has a reason to." He sounded so very proud of that woman, like an actual father. It was almost impossible to imagine an overlord acting like that.
Valentino was ready to explode, which was not hard to see by the way the exhaled smoke of his ever-present cigarette got thicker and harder to see through.
Husk chuckled lowly. "I assume you did not come here just to complain about my employees, right?"
For a second, Val did not know what to say until he simply sat back, acting like he'd calmed down. He did not, though; he clenched the cigarette holder between his claws.
"You're right," he clenched his sharp teeth, "tell me about that casino of yours."
The cat demon put out his cigar. "Gladly," he said. "'Lady Luck' currently has 995 rooms for all my guests from all over the seven rings. The part that is actually a casino takes up 80,000 square feet of space. This building has a showroom, rooftop swimming pool, fitness center, bingo room, restaurants for both cannibals and non-cannibals. It also has several bars and strip clubs," Husk explained with dripping pride.
"I want your casino, if I win a game."
