Chapter 5

The doctors finally get Maddie stable. Severide doesn't move from her bedside. I'm staying here till she wakes up. He told Will. I'm not leaving her.  Severide grabs her hands. Maddie is now on a vent. He tells Boden Cruz is active lieutenant on truck until Maddie wakes up. I can't leave her. If she wakes up and I'm not here. I don't think I would be able to forgive myself.  Take all the time you need Kelly. 51 will be waiting for you.  Kelly you need something to eat. I'm not hungry. Severide you need some sleep. I'm sleeping right in this chair. Not like she is going to wake up ever. Severide jumps up from the chair. What you say Miller. She will not wake up. Face facts.  Severide goes to swing at him. Casey steps in between. Miller get out of here.  Gladly. I'm happy I'm out of 51. So I am.  Tell your pal Danny the police are going to find him.  Maddie deserves this. Severide punches Miller. Get the fuck out before I beat your ass. I'm not scared of you Severide. 

Come and get it fucker.  Kelly go back in the room now Hailey said to him.  I have good news Danny is in custody. Jay arrested him this morning. Kelly let's out a sigh of relief.  Now if only Maddie would wake up he said.  She will Hailey said. She is a fighter. Yes she is he replied back. I'm not leaving her side till she does.  Severide continues to sit by Maddie's beside. He continues to talk to her. He tells her Danny is in jail. He sees a jump in the machines.  He felt his hand get squeezed. He tells her that she is moving in with him.  Hey he yells! What happened Hailey runs in. I swear that when I told Maddie she is moving in with me.  I think she flicked me off.   Kelly you probably were thinking you saw it but you didn't.   I saw what I saw Hailey.  Come we are getting you something to eat.  No I'm not leaving her.  How many times do I have to tell you guys this. 

Severide I know you want to be by her bedside but you listen to me. You know damn  well when she wakes up and finds out you haven't been eating or sleeping because of her.  What do  you think she say to you.  A few choices words he said laughing.  What else Hailey says . More choice words.  Kelly Hailey sighed.  She would be mad that I didn't take care of myself and I shouldn't be always worrying about her cause she will be fine.   That if I ended up in the hospital too. She would be pissed off.  Yeah she would.  You know when you too had that fight.  She called me in tears.  She told me she loved you.   She will kill me for telling you this. 

I love her to Hailey.  If anything happened to her. I would go down to a deep dark place. That's not going to happen Kelly. She is going to come out of this. Now come and get something to eat. No he replied.  Well I'm bringing you something Kelly. You need to eat. I'll eat when she wakes up. Hailey leaves to grab food for the two of them.

Casey comes and sits next to Severide. She is right you know you need to take care of yourself.  If that were me in that bed Maddie wouldn't leave me for a second.  So I'm staying right here.    Yes she would be by yourside. Maddie would give the Drs. And nurses hell too. Severide laughs. I know you guys are coming from a good place and care about me. I have to be here in case something happens. We will be right here with you Severide.  I know man. I'm playing  everything over in my head again. I should have been there Casey.  I feel so guilty.

Sevride don't feel guilty.  As Severide  was going to respond.  Will walks in to check on Maddie.  Will tells them they are going to try to ween Maddie off the vent in a couple days. If she does well they can move her out of ICU to a regular room.  She still has a long recovery ahead. We are moderating the brain bleed. She is a fighter Will said.  Is she going to wake up Severide asked.   Time will tell Kelly Will said.

Hailey comes back with food and puts the bag of food in front of Severides face and says eat this now.  He looks at her. What did I tell you.  I don't care what you said she told  him.  You are going to eat. Severide grabs the bag and sets it down by him.  Kelly! Hailey!

Casey and Hailey walk outside the room. He won't listen to me Hailey told Casey. He won't leave her side Hailey. I tired talking to him but he feels guilty about not being there when this happened. He feels like he needs to be here 24/7. He is going to be no good to Maddie if he ends up in the hospital for dehydration and lack of eating . There was one another person that could get through to him.  Shay they  both said at the same time.   Severide heard what they said. He said well Shay isn't here anymore . The only other person would be Maddie and she is laying  here. 

Severide looks to see intelligence, Trudy and all of 51 in the waiting room.  It brought tears to his eyes.  He comes out to thank everyone for being here for Maddie and him.  She really is loved he said.  The nurse comes in to check Maddie's vitals.  Anything changes still the same Kelly.

Severide falls asleep in the chair and has a dream about Maddie.  Sexyride Maddie said.
You need to take care of yourself. Listen to Hailey and Casey he is your best friend.  She appears sitting on his lap. I'm going to come back to you. Is this real he asked. No baby this is a dream I'm still in coma. Kelly Severide take care of yourself if not for you but for me. She kisses him. He wakes up and looks down. Jesus in my dreams. She has an effect on me.

Hey you fell asleep. Yeah I had a dream about Maddie. She told me I needed to take care of myself and I needed to listen to you and Hailey.  She will come back to me. It felt so real Casey.   She is my rock the fact that she is not wake.  Is killing me man. I know Severide. If this was Gabbie I be going insane.

The next day Will comes in and checks on Maddie.  H proceeds to tell Severide they are going to start weaning Maddie off the vent.  He starts lowering the vent settings.

Ok we will see how she does with this.
We will go from there he told them.

Severide continues to stay by Maddie's bedside and pray that she wakes up soon. 
He can't imagine life without her.

Casey convinced Kelly to go home and sleep in his bed.  He will sit watch with Maddie and will call him if anything happens.  Kelly puts up a fight but agrees. 

He gets into his car and drives to his place .
Severide trys to turn on radio to keep his mind off Maddie and the situation.   He gets home and parks and goes in.  He jumps into the shower.  Let's the water run
on him and he just starts to sob. I can't leave without you. He says out loud. 

He turns off the shower puts on flannel pajama pants and a black t shirt and flops on the bed and passes out.
