Annie's POV
"Grievers" the word came out quietly and I wasn't even sure if anyone could have heard me
"What?" Marty's voice cracked as he spoke, "Grievers?"
"You know what shucking Grievers are buddy," I shot at him,
"Yeah but why are you saying it like they're gonna come in here? They stay in the maze,"
"Annie what's bloody going on?" Newt asked from my left.
"Everyone get something to protect yourself with, I'm serious here!" I ordered to anyone who could hear me.
"And why should we listen to you?" Marty cried and a couple people agreed, a few scattered to find weapons or sticks to carry with them.
"Cause I'm first in command, need anything else?" I challenged. Marty looked like he wanted to disagree but he shut his mouth and reluctantly shook his head. He and the couple other boys dispersed.
"Annie-" I spun and grabbed Newts arm before he could finish,
"The doors won't close," I paused, "at night. You think the Grievers are just going to stay in there? No, they're hungry and love to cause damage."
"Are you saying," he paused and I could see the wheels spinning in his head as he tried to rack his brain around what I was saying.
"The Grievers are going to attack... us."
"Oh shuck." he said.
"Oh shuck is right." I nodded,
"Alright, I know you said we can't change the future but is there anythings we can do to stop it?" He said and I grimaced thinking about what consequences there could be. Newt hesitantly continued, "is there anyone we should keep safe?"
I thought about Chuck getting grabbed and the only reason he stayed alive, for those short few hours was Alby. Alby had sacrifice his life for Chuck for what? Chuck died anyway, he was never going to make it. Even if he made it out of the Maze he wouldn't have lasted a day in the Scorch. No we can't change anything.
"No," I said.
"Not even somethi-"
"I said no," I spoke, not budging,
"Please Annie,
"We have to live our life like we don't know the future, and I know, I get it thats hard. Sometimes I regret telling you that all of this I know and I know how it plays out." I confessed,
"Why?" he asked and put a gentle hand on my shoulder,
"Because that means I have someone who will try to change the future, someone who will fight for it because I know what happens but I can't budge I can't change my mind and change what is going to happen. Who knows what the world will turn into if I do." I finally said.
"Hold up the world?" His face scrunched up in confusion, "you mean there's something out there? There's something more than the Maze, Alby was kind of right?"
"Shuck," i breathed,
"Annie-"
"Stop saying my name! I can't tell you anything more, not right now. I promise when the time comes I will." He looked at me with this look on his face, "I promise Newt, please believe me."
