The elevator door opens to a barely lit room. I walk inside and take note of the hallway ahead of me and the door to the right.
'Explore as needed.'-the note said.
Might as well do it now.
I step through and flip on the switch, showing me a room with various filming devices from the 1920s. A projection board was against the wall with a couch in front of it.
Guess this is where she watches movies.
I turn off the light and go into the hallway, exploring the rest of the basement until I'm satisfied. I take a look in the kitchen, taking note that there seemed to be every ingredient imaginable. The main problem was that I wasn't very confident in my cooking skills. Nor my creativity for making new meals every day.
Lunch the note said? I can't think of much so I hope she likes pizza.
It's something I can do easily and quickly due to past occupations back in America.
Speaking of, I probably won't have much luck getting anywhere if this is in the middle of some forest in Rome. I need to find out exactly where I am.
After making the pizza I hear a noise from the main hallway. The door opens slowly and in flies the doll from before.
"About time! I thought you were going to take forever to make lunch! Donna and I are starving." The doll squeaked out as it floated closer.
Normally I would be freaking out but I felt too mentally exhausted to react.
"Donna? Is that the Lord-"
"Lady Beneviento! That's how you'll refer to her." The doll quickly snapped at me.
I roll my eyes, "Lady Beneviento, is she the one in that portrait upstairs?"
The doll ignores me and levitates quietly before quickly moving to the pizza, ordering me to cut it and lay a tray in front of the surgical room doors.
And I do as I'm told. I stand in front of the door. Waiting until I realize I should probably knock. Which I do. And then I wait more. But nothing happens.
Does she know I'm still here?
I move to press my ear against the door before I hesitate.
Why do I care? I'm not going to be here for long. No point in trying to solve this woman.
I turn and leave, heading back upstairs.
The rest of the day is spent with notes giving me 'hints' on my duties. I don't mind it as my work isn't stressful in any way. What I do mind is how this woman can sneak around so quietly and so much without me noticing.
A few days pass with nothing major. The doll introduced herself as Angie at some point but that's not anything concerning. I haven't made any progress on escaping either. It seems like there's almost always a snowstorm outside. And when there's not, I can hear those creatures from before howling and snarling hungrily. Waiting for anything to cross their path. I was beginning to get impatient.
I knock on the door like usual but this time I hide around the corner and peek out. Waiting for Donna to appear.
God this is so stupid. What am I even trying to accomplish here? I'm just bored if anything. I should leave this poor woman alone.
I begin to move from my spot when I see the door knob move. I quickly hide again and stare intently. The door opens to reveal an insanely pale hand on the door knob. The same black clothes from before, face from the painting, and...a dark, almost pitch black eye widening as it spots me. Wait...
Does she have one eye?
Before I can fully see the other one she slams the door shut, frantic hands struggling to lock the door.
I stare at the door before guilt settles uncomfortably in my stomach. She hadn't explicitly stated that I couldn't creep, but I think it was more of an unspoken rule. I stand there, unmoving before deciding to try to apologize. I walk to the door and knock softly.
"I'm sorry. I shouldn't have been spying on you like that. It was just out of curiosity but that doesn't excuse it." I speak loud enough so she can hear me.
I'm met by silence. I sigh and walk back to the elevator to clean something upstairs.
That night I found a note on my bed.
'From now on, when you make meals leave them by the door and immediately leave the basement. Stay away from the basement until the next meal time.'
I crumple up the note and groan in irritation at myself.
Good job. Now you have no chance of finding out where you are. At least I'll be spending more time up here. Maybe I can find a loose window or hidden passage.
I ready myself for bed and stare at the ceiling. Counting the minutes until I finally fall asleep.
I find myself back at home. Back in America. On my bed just mindlessly scrolling on my phone until I get a message.
Ethan-'Hey, it's been a while'
I respond-'Yeah it has. We should meet up again soon. I'd love to meet Rosemary and catch up with Mia'
Ethan-'That might be a bit difficult, we're kinda in Romania'
'WHAT?'
Ethan-'Yeah we relocated after the whole Louisiana incident. We thought it would be safer'
'Is it in a nice area?'
Ethan-'It has a nice landscape, and the people here are nice. Mia likes it here'
'Fuck it. Drop the address and you'll be seeing me soon'
Ethan-'Really? Are you sure?'
'Duh? It's been a while since I've seen my favorite girl and my dumb excuse of a brother'
I roll my eyes and pull up my laptop, quickly searching for airplane tickets. Sure, maybe it was a dumb idea to decide to go so quickly but I didn't have anything planned anytime soon.
Looks like I'll be going to Romania. What's the worst that can happen?
I wake up with stiff muscles, struggling to sit up. I shake my head in disbelief.
The worst that could've happened happened. At least I'm alive. I just need to get out of here so Ethan doesn't worry.
