Later that day, when she got home, her mom greeted her with more bad news: her grandparents' cat died.
Ever since what happened to Danielle, Gwen's life kept getting worse. She didn't know if it was because it gave her bad luck or just because she thought too much about it too much.
Either way, she couldn't take it anymore.
Her grandma always said "good things are coming".
She loved her grandma. She was her hero. She inspired her to always keep trying.
She didn't see her grandma everyday because she lived faraway, but she always remembered what she told her.
She was going to believe in her. She believed that good things were coming.
A month slowly went by, Gwen trying to survive without her best friend. Never forgetting what her grandma always told her.
She went to the hospital to visit Danielle every week, hoping she would wake up soon.
That week, dr. Cooper called Gwen before she came, with good news. The teenager ran as fast as she could to the hospital, knowing what the nurse meant by good news.
Finally, good things were coming.
She waited impatiently for the woman to call her. After five minutes, she was relieved to hear dr. Cooper's sweet voice.
"Gwen Jones?" she stood up from her seat and went to the nurse "Follow me to her room. I'm sure you will want to see her awake"
As they walked, a soft smile appeared on the teenager's lips. After less than a minute, when they arrived, the woman opened the door slowly and they walked in.
There she was again.
Danielle.
She still had a cast on her left arm and left leg, but this time, she was different.
She was sitting and not laying.
But most importantly, she was conscious. She was awake.
"Good afternoon, Miss. How are you feeling?" the nurse asked with her sweet voice.
The girl didn't reply. Instead, she looked at them confused.
"You can talk to me, it's okay. She's the girl that wanted to visit you" dr. Cooper added.
"I... I'm... fine, dr. Cooper" she answered with a low and shy voice. It was clear that she was a little scared.
"Hi, Danielle" Gwen said.
The girl looked at her, the confused look still on her face. It looked like she wanted to say something, but she couldn't.
"It's totally fine, you don't need to say anything if you don't want to"
"I'm... sorry" she finally said.
"Why?" her best friend looked at her, waiting for an explanation.
"For... for not re... remembering you"
"Aw.... that's not your fault. There's no need to worry about that. Bad things happen. But don't worry, good things are coming" Gwen said, looking at her best friend with a sweet smile.
"Thank you" she whispered "For not getting... mad... at me"
"Of course. I can't get mad at you for something that's not your fault"
"What's your... your name?"
Gwen looked at her, sadness written all across her face.
"I know this sounds weird, but I can't tell you. I mean, I can, I just... I don't think I should. Not yet. Can I ask you for a favor?" she asked as she sat down on a chair next to her.
Danielle nodded slowly.
"I want you to try as hard as you can, to remember me. I know it's not easy. But I'm going to show you pictures of us every day, maybe that can help? I don't know. Just, please, just... try. Can you do that for me?"
The other girl nodded again, this time faster. She looked sad, like she understood what Gwen felt.
"Thank you so much. I really appreciate you trying. And if it doesn't work, and you can't remember me, it's totally fine. Because I'll know that at least you tried. And that means a lot to me"
A soft smile appeared on Danielle's face for the first time since she woke up, warming her best friend's heart.
She then took out her phone, opening her photos app.
After scrolling for less than a minute, Gwen found a picture that satisfied her and opened it, showing it to Danielle.
It was a picture that Gwen took of both of them looking at the camera while it looked like they were singing.
The background was a concert and their favorite artist, Olivia Rodrigo, was performing.
"This was some months ago, when we went together to the GUTS tour. This is Olivia Rodrigo, our favorite singer. In this picture, she was singing your favorite song, pretty isn't pretty"
She scrolled to the next picture. In the background, Olivia Rodrigo was playing the piano while singing.
"Here, she was performing my favorite song, teenage dream"
She scrolled again to the next picture.
"And this was when Olivia performed traitor. Our second favorite song"
She put her phone back in her pocket and looked at her best friend.
"It was our dream to see her in real life. And it happened. We couldn't believe we were there. It was the best day of our life"
A tear rolled down her cheek.
"I'm sorry, I'm just a little emotional"
She smiled at her best friend, and she did the same.
"Do you remember?"
Danielle looked at her, a sad face replacing her previous smile.
"I'm... sorry"
Gwen was disappointed. But she quickly changed her mood, trying to avoid being sad.
"It's fine. Don't worry, I didn't expect you to remember. It's not your fault"
"It is"
"What do you mean?" Gwen asked, confused.
"If I had looked before crossing the street... this wouldn't have happened. If I wasn't listening to music, and paid more attention instead, I wouldn't be here"
"How do you know that?"
"The doctors told me that people saw it when it happened, they were the ones that called the hospital immediately. The point is, I would remember you, and I wouldn't have ruined your life"
Gwen got up from her seat and hugged Danielle. When they separated, they looked at eachother.
"Bad things always happen. You can't avoid them. That's life. Destiny decided to make that happen, and we have to deal with the consequences. You can only help by trying to remember"
